Dear Editor,
It's official, the city I grew up in has crossed the line from social organization to social repression ["
The Secret's Out," News, Oct. 25]. It's now illegal to swim in the Colorado from Longhorn Dam to the Montopolis Bridge? As a canoeist and avid lover of all the swimming holes around town, this is ridiculous. As a human, who by natural law should not be denied the ability to pursue one's happiness (whatever the risk) and be free to cool down on a hot summer day in Texas without paying a $3 entrance fee, I say nothing and shake my head in disgust.
Michael Ventura and his “
Letters at 3am” columns have it right; our basic freedoms, which exist at a level not governable by any person or government, are being chipped away by liability, lawyers, politicians, and bureaucrats. Can't swim? Well then, you can follow me down the river as I float, enjoying the true world, and away from the meddling and misguided musings of a once-great place. Good luck, humanity.
