Only Use Horizontal Lines in Redistricting Effort

RECEIVED Mon., Dec. 17, 2012

Dear Editor,
Though redistricting efforts have just begun, it appears as if the internecine sniping has begun in earnest ["10-1: If It Ain't Baroque, Let's Fix It," News, Dec. 14]. I recently heard a suggestion that seems to me to have great merit. Let's celebrate Austin's diversity and progressivism by not using any vertical lines to draw the new City Council districts. I-35 is often seen as an artificial dividing line for the city, so let's transcend that barrier and ignore it in the redistricting process. Rather than copying the polarized national model, let's come together as the proud city that we are and use only horizontal lines to draw the districts. I'm certain that there are powerful political and legal forces that would oppose such a plan, but let's overcome them.
Sincerely
Wally Pliszka
