Reporting Needs To Be More In-Depth

    I read the story on the proposed apartment complex and was very disappointed [“Montopolis Battle Lines,” News, Oct. 26]. Nowhere in the story was it mentioned that those new apartments would make 51% of the housing stock in Montopolis subsidized rent apartments. About 10 years ago, that number was 10%. I didn't see any mention of Council Members Kathie Tovo, Laura Morrison, and Sheryl Cole giving lip service to dispersing affordable housing in all parts but not putting their votes where their mouths are. I guess that conversation made for good political fodder but apparently little else. Nowhere in the story was there a mention of the winning lawsuit against Dallas County and the city of Dallas for doing exactly what Austin is doing: placing all the housing for low-income families in parts of town with high crime rates and low opportunity levels. Nowhere in the story were the studies by the Kirwan Institute regarding opportunity areas of Austin. The rating for Montopolis was listed by Kirwan as about as low as it gets.
    It seemed like the reporter attended the council hearing, talked to a few people, and took them at their word. Not the kind of in-depth reporting I've come to expect from the Chronicle.
