Ben Fountain (Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, a recent National Book Award finalist), expressed some surprise that his novel hadn't been met with more accusations of a "leftist agenda." He spoke with great passion about his distress in the direction the country was going: "Since when did dissent and independent thinking and the spirit of rebellion become unpatriotic? Since when did war become more patriotic than peace?"
