ACC Annexation Vexation

By Lee Nichols, October 1, 2010, News

Opposition has sprung up to the various Austin Community College annexation elections. On the Nov. 2 ballot (early voting Oct. 18-29), voters in the Bastrop, Elgin, Hays, McDade, and San Marcos school districts will decide whether to join the ACC taxing district. Round Rock attorney Stephen Casey filed a request for an injunction in the 335th District Court against the election on behalf of a group of Bastrop ISD taxpayers, alleging that Bastrop ISD and ACC violated conflict-of-interest statutes by participating in the petition certification process to get the election on the ballot. Also, a variety of websites have sprung up in opposition, including www.stopacc.org (San Marcos), www.noacctax.com (Hays), and www.noacctax.info (Bastrop). Jo Snider, creator of StopACC.org, is retired from the Texas State history faculty and said: "I don't think that it will benefit San Marcos anywhere near to the amount of money that will be leaving the community. ... I'm not against taxes, and lord knows I'm not against education taxes, but this is not a good move for San Marcos."
