Sophia King: A Brief Chronology
A chronology of the life of Sophia King
March 24, 1995: King is slightly injured at her home in an incident the police report describes as "parental discipline."
November, 1997: Criminal mischief complaint filed against King by ex-boyfriend Jim L. Humphrey.
Jan. 18, 1998: King summons APD and alleges assault by Jim L. Humphrey, but files no formal complaint.
May, 1998: King graduates from Anderson High School.
July 4, 1999: King's 1-year-old son Jim is injured by a car when she leaves him and his 3-year-old sister unattended.
Fall, 1999: Austin Police Dept. rejects Travis Co. request for additional funds for sheriff's mental health unit, creates own program instead.
Nov. 3, 1999: A fire attributed to an unattended stove destroys King's apartment at Booker T. Washington apartments, and she and her children move into Rosewood Courts.
Nov. 25, 1999: In a dispute with a neighbor, King is slashed on the leg but declines treatment by EMS or to make a formal complaint with police.
April, 2000: Rosewood housing management issues repeated complaints against King for noise and disruption, and throwing trash and possessions onto the common courtyard. Housing Authority considering eviction.
June 28, 2000: King is arrested and jailed for assault after striking a 6-year-old boy with her fist.
Aug. 28, 2001: King's daughter Kearra is slightly injured when housing authority vehicle hits her bicycle. No charges filed. King threatens lawsuit against HACA, and her behavior grows increasingly erratic and confrontational.
Oct. 18, 2001: Police summoned by housing manager find King on Rosewood grounds covered with kitchen cleanser and complaining of "anthrax" or "bio" in her apartment. She is committed to State Hospital, and Child Protective Services takes temporary custody of her children, who are later placed with grandmother Brenda Elendu.
Nov. 26, 2001: Released from Austin State Hospital after a diagnosis of schizophrenia, King attacks her mother in a dispute over custody of the children. She is arrested and jailed.
March, 2002: Travis Co. Sheriff's mental health unit and APD mental health unit move into joint office on East Avenue.
June 7-10, 2002: Numerous complaints from King's neighbors and apartment management about noise from King's apartment and erratic behavior. Police visit apartment about 3am Monday, June 10, and compel King to turn down music but take no other action.
June 11, 2002: King, while allegedly attacking housing manager Diana Powell with a knife, is shot and killed by APD officer John Coffey.
