Dum Dum Girls

Auditorium Shores, Nov. 2

Dum Dum Girls graduated from girl group cliches with last fall's acclaimed Only In Dreams, but that doesn't mean that the bicoastal quartet has tacked down its stage presence just yet. All garbed in black, they could have backed up Jack White while zooming through varied points in the Girls' discography. Coquettish "Bedroom Eyes" sparkled brightly in the afternoon heat, with Kristin "Dee Dee" Gundred's smokey alto countered against falsetto harmonies. Pulls from latest EP End of Daze, particularly the title track, dedicated to "the kid in the Black Flag shirt that knows every word," fared best. While the garage pop skipped along, there was a stoic quality to the performance that was hard to discern as intentional, or residual effects of Gundred's documented stage fright. Better get over it quick, since Dum Dum Girls just became the latest addition to Terrence Malick's film project.
