ACL Live Shot: Stars

"It's so hot here it makes me dizzy in my head," yelled Stars singer Torquil Campbell upon taking the stage. Although the Canadians may have been confused by the climate, Stars' intricate indie pop-rock retains its Austin vibe. The band's lush instrumentation recalls Arcade Fire, only more mature and with much darker lyrics. Stars' dual vocalists, Campbell and Amy Millan, interact and emote "We Don't Want Your Body," standing for f-u-n. And their voices play well together, Millan's high dreamy voice the girlish partner to Campbell's deep and distinct vocals, which felt Morrissey-like. Light, upbeat tunes kept afternoon ACL early birds swaying happily, although popular single "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" provided an intense moment as the entire crowd sang the sad words in unison. Another poignant moment came with "Dead Hearts," which Campbell introduced by saying, "Even when it's light outside, your ghosts are all around you. Hold onto your ghosts." Ultimately, however, joy shined through Stars, with Campbell remarking, "I'm remembering why ACL is the best festival to play in the world!"
