Saturday's Flavor: Papercuts
My most-listened-to album last year was Beach House's Teen Dream. I'm not sure if it was the best album of the year, but I sure loved to listen to it while working on my computer, riding my bike, and driving my ice cream truck around the country.
Sneaking in somewhere in my Top 10 was Papercuts' album You Can Have What You Want. It came out in 2009, but that didn't stop me from rocking the shit out of it in 2010. A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to sneak into the Beach House/Papercuts show at the Fonda in Los Angeles (thanks, Donna!) and was super excited to see the latter band open the show and play a bunch of tunes from their new album on Sub Pop, Fading Parade. I positioned myself right in front of the soundboard, and I'm pretty sure I was the only one pogoing during their set.
You'd think it'd be a bit too early in the year to have a good idea of what album you're likely to listen to the most in 2011, but I'd bet any amount of money – or ice cream – that Papercuts takes the cake. It's for the same reasons that I rocked Beach House so much: You can dig it in most any setting, and I'm sure I'll be zoning out to it all summer while I'm on tour.
If you're hesitant, just listen to the first two songs on the album. If those don't reel you in, well, hmmm, I guess there's no sense in me loaning you my Beach House disc ....
