Fat Possum Party

Club de Ville, Wednesday, March 16

With Therapies Son's inverted George Harrison guitar licks and Beach Fossils' one-manned drones serving as ample appetizers, Fat Possum's party hit full swing well before 2pm when Odd Future's MellowHype had a hyped up crowd in full-on "Swag" chants before he even rapped a song. Flanked intermittently by fellow OFers Tyler, the Creator; Domo Genesis; and Mike G; Left Brain and Hodgy Beats proved hilarious, charismatic, and bad as hell, starting a riot on their own "Fuck the Police." Mud-drenched Mississippi duo Bass Drum of Death brought the slop in two-minute cuts afterward. Following them, Porcelain Raft's dreary dream pop couldn't bring much to the table, especially with Tennis sandwiching them on the other side. The Denver duo has a goody in singer Alaina Moore, whose full-bodied vibrato proved way more substantive than her tiny frame would lead one to believe. Unknown Mortal Orchestra's psychedelic power-soul proved the perfect lead-in to British fuzz rockers Yuck, who fortunately for the groundswell of fans at that point were the afternoon's most tightly packaged group. Things topped out with that; Chicago's hazy slackers the Smith Westerns just couldn't keep pace.
