Randy Rogers Band

The fifth studio release from the Randy Rogers Band is supposed to be a groundbreaker. After having Radney Foster produce its last two discs, the Hill Country fivepiece moved to studio vet Paul Worley, who's worked with the Dixie Chicks and Big & Rich, among a long list of others. Accordingly, Worley burnishes the group's sound to an unmistakable pop country sheen, but as has been the case thus far, the weak link is Rogers' mundane songwriting and his voice, which seems to have only one less-than-convincing gear. "Too Late for Goodbye," "Missing You Is More Than I Can Do," and "Holding on to Letting Go" all deal with the same old heartbreak, none in a manner more than rote. Near anthem "I've Been Looking for You So Long" manages to break out with some scalding guitar, but such moments are rare. Burning the Day isn't a breakthrough, just a highly polished version of more of the same.
