Altercation Comedy
Comedy has its perks: making movies with Ron Jeremy
By Audra Schroeder, Fri., Nov. 6, 2009
Saturday, 2:30pm, Yellow Stage
"A buddy of mine was working at Troma, and they heard about me and gave me a cool speaking role opposite Ron Jeremy in Toxic Avenger IV," explains JT Habersaat. "Pretty hilarious couple of days. I got to have my makeup done in the chair right next to Ron's."
It's all in a day's work for the Austin comedian/writer. Habersaat's long-running punk zine, Altercation, gave way to his Altercation Comedy tour, which has been stumbling through punk clubs for the past few years. Add being cast in a Troma Entertainment film, and he's living the dream of most guys aged 18-35. Yet he's still hitting the pavement in the name of laughs, this time with Jake Flores and Joe Staats. With YouTube and its viral peers now a stage for comedians, Habersaat recognizes comedians have to work harder to get into nontraditonal venues.
"Most of the venues I tour have never hosted comedy before, so it's pretty much my job just not to suck. ... It can definitely be done outside of the comedy club circuit if you're willing to take the leap of faith and be confident in both the audience you're trying to reach as well as your material."
Other notables taking the leap on the (Yellow) comedy stage: Nick Thune (4:40pm, Sunday), a singer-songwriter/comedian who peppers his sets with deadpan observations like, "Don't you wish someone would open up a restaurant called 'I Don't Care'?"; Todd Barry (6:30pm, Saturday), a regular voice on Adult Swim and the late-night comedy circuit; Austin's New Movement Comedy Group (12:30pm, Sunday), expats from ColdTowne who have started their own improv school; Metallagher (3pm, Sunday), a Metallica cover band fronted by a Gallagher impersonator; Chelsea Peretti (3:30pm, Saturday), a member of the all-lady comedy troupe Variety Shac; Michael McDonald-channeler Josh Fadem (7:40pm, Sunday); former Mr. Show member Brian Posehn (8pm, Sunday); and sketch crew Whitest Kids U'Know (8:45pm, Sunday).
