Neko Case

Live From Austin TX (New West)

As enthralling as Neko Case is on album, the alt.country diva's live shows can be occasionally listless. This 2003 Austin City Limits performance poses no such problems, though at 42 minutes, it's much too brief. With modest backing by Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel, guitar, and banjo; Tom Ray on bass; and Kelly Hogan on vocals, Case's voice soars on covers from Dylan, Hank Williams, and Catherine Irwin of Freakwater. Her own "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Deep Red Bells" come off both intriguing and florid. ***.5
