Shooter Jennings
Electric Rodeo (Universal)
The king and queen of outlaw country, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, oozed sultry, sexy charm and were graced with two-of-a-kind talent. That they spawned son Shooter is merely icing on the johnnycake. Waylon's death four years ago laid another rebel to rest, but Shooter fills the rowdy void with strutting confidence. Electric Rodeo, his sure-shot sophomore LP, lassoes Southern rock and pistol-whips country into his corral at point blank. Jennings' voice is eerily reminiscent of his father's hefty baritone, whiskey-rich and potent as moonshine. The drive-by truckin' of "Little White Lines," winking humor of "Alligator Chomp (The Ballad of Martin Luther Frog Jr.)," and pure country of "(The) Living Proof" will make wild-eyed Southern folk schwing into spring, especially since Shooter's got the Skynyrd swagger on "Gone to Carolina" and tips the Stetson to dad on "Some Rowdy Women." Jessi Colter released her own 100%-proof album, Out of the Ashes, a few months ago, leaving no question that the badass Jennings family tradition is still alive and, well, smokin'.
