Who Are Your Customers? (Furniture)

Judging from the cover of Daniel Francis Doyle's debut 12-inch, a collage of various woodland creatures, he's apparently found a way to channel all the voices in his head: thrashy guitar loops over heart-attack drums and his vocal chords as a sacrifice – done while wearing an early-Nineties, Madonna-style head-mic. The asphyxiated romp of "She Breathes," on which Doyle grunts and screams in the most unnatural of ways, fills three minutes with frantic guitar and fractured drumming. "Head Up" starts off with Doyle sweetly singing about a lost love, but c'mon, you know he's about to melt your face off. And he does, over speed-metal blast beats and repeated, larynx-shredding shouts of "Hey, come back!" "Ready to Develop" is a quirkier angular uppercut, tarred and feathered. Closer "Wrapped Up" shakes the ground, never straying from the short album's unrelenting, dystopic pace. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what Doyle's skree sounds like. Something akin to being chased by a machete-wielding maniac in the woods. Perhaps that's why all the critters on his cover of Who Are Your Customers? look so frightened.
