Frank Erwin Center
1701 Red River
Since 1977, the distinctive squat cylinder of the Frank C. Erwin Jr. Special Events Center (or, as locals know it, the Drum) has pulled double duty as home to UT’s Longhorn Basketball team and ATX’s biggest indoor venue. Flexible seating arrangements vary from the 7,820 theatre configuration to the in-the-round capacity record of 17,829 set by John Denver. Sadly, its history as a destination for touring acts as big and varied as Springsteen, McCartney, Pavarotti, and Barney the Dinosaur won’t save it: the FEC is penciled for demolition in the coming years to make space for the expansion of the new Dell Medical School.
In case you missed it, the Longhorns are currently riding a 19-game winning streak and have risen up the polls to No. 8/10. Freshwoman Joyner Holmes was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season and the espnW National Player of the Week for her performance against Baylor and Kansas. She leads all Big 12 freshwomen in scoring, double-doubles, and rebounding. UT defeated Florida State on the road Monday in a double-OT nail-biter 92-88 with junior Brooke McCarty leading the way with 29 points while playing all 50 minutes. After stunning the No. 2/5 Bears in Waco 85-79 on Feb. 6, UT (14-0, Big 12) welcomes Baylor (13-1) to the Drum in a huge Big 12 matchup. This conference title hangs in the balance. Vs. Baylor: Mon., Feb. 20Mon., Feb. 20, 8pm.
