Performance

Sound & Vision '99 New performance festival spearheaded by local theatre-dance dynamo Jason Phelps (Race of the Ark Tattoo, Aria Inertia, Angels in America), who founded it to showcase more boundary-crossing multi-disciplinary stage work and more genre-busting music in this arts-loving town. The fest consists of a prime-time program and a late-night series, the former featuring a double bill of a new Margery Segal dance piece (see Dance Listings) and a performance of the Walter Thompson Orchestra's Sound Paintings; and the latter featuring local and visiting musical ensembles. Scheduled for the Sound & Vision at 11 series are: our town's own avant-garde big band, the Creative Opportunity Orchestra, with daredevil vocalist Tina Marsh (Thu); local cinematic jazzsters the Golden Arm Trio, with members of the Rota-phile ensemble Tosca (Fri); techno-buzzer Phylr (aka Jim Filer Coleman), with New Orleans free-range percussionists Gas Tank Orchestra (Sat). FINAL THREE NIGHTS!Feb 18-20, Thu-Sat, at Hyde Park Theatre, 511 W. 43rd. Segal/Sound Paintings: 8pm, $10 Thu/$12 Fri-Sat; Sound & Vision at 11: 11pm, $5. 454-TIXS.
