| Friday 25, Austin, Texas When it comes time to leave the house, to bid the last of the best wishes and shake off the lingering effects of a belly-bulging dose of tryptophan, there'll be no shortage of musical offerings from a host of local favorites. At the City Coliseum, you'll find a genuine Tejano extravaganza with Lone Star superstars Little Joe y La Familia, joined by Johnny and Rocky Hernandez, and Austin's own Ruben Ramos & the Texas Revolution. Alfonso Ramos opens the show at 8pm. This one's gonna be big and it's gonna sell fast, so you may have to skip that second dessert. The Continental Club has a party of a different mood -- Blue Christmas with honky-tonk hero Dale Watson. Just as Watson's sad-song crooning can make you break down in your egg nog, the saxophone of fireball frontman Jon Blondell will set your spirits ablaze at the Elephant Room. If you're down on the south side of town, stop in for a bit of home-style Bubba-country tradition at the Saxon Pub as Rusty Weir holds court like he's done for most of this decade. If you're up north, not satisfied with just sitting and listening to mere professionals, another tradition of equal duration and renown is Pinetop Snookie's Karaoke Christmas at the Hole in the Wall. If you make it as far as downtown, Carl Settles will be playing original music on the piano at the Highlife Cafe between 7:30-10:30pm. The positive force of MC Overlord will shake up the Steamboat, while W.C. Clark and his beautiful blues guitar will captivate the Speakeasy. So, happy holidays, and lay off the cookies -- you're going out tonight. |
