Whether the demolition of the old and construction of the new will benefit many or only a few is a lingering question.

The first African-American neighborhood museum established in Texas, housed in the original 1926 city library building, which was moved to the Eastside and opened to blacks in 1933. RBJ Health Center (S-43) 15 Waller, 469-2015. With a $2 million remodeling project, the Austin/Travis County Health Department building has expanded its capabilities to test and treat people with TB and sexually transmitted diseases. "We're not affiliated with the retirement home, though some of us should probably be over there," one good-humored employee recently noted.

RBJ Residental Tower (S-42) 21 Waller, 476-6051. Founded 26 years ago, this privately run retirement home for the elderly is named after Rebekah Baines Johnson, LBJ's mother.

Sanctuary Fundraiser (R-78) 3121 E. 12th, 477-2443. For seven years Anne Terrell has been taking in the homeless and displaced of East Austin without assistance from public funds. Donations are welcome.

Sheetmetal Workers Local Union 67 (E-107) 3601 Goodwin, 928-8251. The union runs an apprentice school, offers journeyman training, and fights for the right to a living wage.

Travis County Housing Service (E-21) 5021 E. Cesar Chavez, 385-4036. Installing ramps, fixing leaky roofs, and repairing faulty plumbing are only a few of the jobs this organization provides for low-income elderly and handicapped. This program is funded at both city and federal levels. Although they do not have the funds to completely recondition houses, they do their best to make houses safe for those who qualify.

Tri-Angel Unlimited Community Resource Center (R-29) 1210 Rosewood, 494-0760. A nonprofit which networks with schools, government agencies, universities, and businesses to coordinate volunteer activity and promote community improvement. Tri-Angel is also a clearinghouse of information and contacts for people hoping to expand their personal opportunities. Betti Carsey Stroud founded Tri-Angel five years ago from a family trust fund, and is now supported with government grants.

Two buildings straddling Poquito Avenue house the agency's central clearinghouse for financial administration, campaign marketing, and selection and monitoring of more than four dozen community agencies. Film/Video

Built in the early 1900s, these warehouse buildings were once the home of a music store, a grain warehouse, a furniture leasing company, and a coffee storage house (building legend has it that the smell of coffee took more than five years to vacate). For the past 20 years, the buildings, collectively known as 501 Studios, have housed a maze of media-related businesses, including video and film production offices, agents, and advertising companies.
