The group that meets here preaches equitable distribution of wealth, a universal language, and compulsory education. Outlying buildings house their considerable community outreach efforts, including education, social services, youth ministry, and political activism.

Ebenezer Baptist Church 1010 E. 10th, 478-1875. Ebenezer means "stone of help," and this parish's active involvement in local politics and community service certainly earns it that noble title. Housed in a lovely limestone and brick structure of Gothic Revival design, Ebenezer Baptist celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1975 with a mortgage-burning ceremony. Nice neon sign out front.

El Buen Pastor Assembly of God 1130 Tillery, 926-9611. This "well-educated, bilingual, middle-class, 'full gospel' church," (so described by its pastor) has been serving the community for 65 years. Its preachers maintain four tenets: salvation, healing, baptism, and the second coming. The church offers Sunday morning services, as well as a Wednesday night "Christian celebration," which consists of a dinner and Bible study.

Emmanuel United Methodist Church 200 Brushy, 472-2712. 100-year old congregation serving southeast Austin community with services in both Spanish and English.
Gospel Lighthouse Church 706 Navasota, 385-2524. In front of the church there are three wood crosses flanked by plastic swans, cement flower troughs, and gold angels. Reverend Jimmy Hunter leads services Wednesday nights, Sunday mornings, and Sunday evenings. One member of the congregation said, "We're all-faith. [We] believe in baptism in the Holy Spirit and, of course, everything the Bible says."

Iglesia Bautista Betania 115 Tillery At 76, Pastor Ciro E. Garcia is the oldest and spriest pastor in the state. He and his congregation have been together for 36 years and constructed this warm red brick church entirely through volunteer efforts of the church members themselves.

Mount Olive Baptist Church 1800 E. 11th, 457-8920. The church was organized in 1889 and expanded in 1986. One of Austin's first African-American establishments, it still actively pursues mission programs.
Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church 2111 S.L. Davis, 472-2844. The street in front of this historic church was renamed after founding pastor S.L. Davis, who commanded the pulpit until he died at the age of 101. Now Davis' grandson fills the preaching shoes.
Mt. Zion Action & Resource Center 2951 E. 14th, 479-9890. The Center is an information and referral service to Mt. Zion members and the wider community. It also sponsors Bible-based counseling services for groups or individuals.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Church 1206 E. Ninth, 478-7955. The church was established in 1907 on Guadalupe & Fifth. In 1926, a second church was built in East Austin to follow the increasing number of Mexican immigrants who had settled there. In 1954, this second incarnation was deemed too small and so the present church was built.

The church was organized in 1880 as as the Simpson Mission Methodist by Matthew Simpson, an active political negotiator, abolitionist, and noted orater. St. Julia's Catholic Church 3010 Lyons, 926-4186. Nearly 1,000 families belong to St. Julia's, some of which have have been enjoying the shady garden and uneven fountain since its dedication in 1957. Breakfast is served every Sunday from 8:30am to 1pm, offering hand-made tortillas, huevos rancheros, and breakfast tacos to the public.

Tempolo La Hermosa 3203 Govalle, 926-5446. The day we met him, Rev. Amado Castillo was spending a hot Saturday mixing mortar for a small cinderblock wall. He stopped his work to show off the enthusiastic red and white interior of his church and to proudly describe his congregation.
The Ministry of Challenge 1500 E. 12th Since 1993, Pastor Tony L. Johnson has been taking in men and women who struggle with drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. He helps them get off the street. So far, his East Austin shelter has housed over 750 people. Donations are welcome.

Wesley United Methodist Church 1160 San Bernard , 478-7007. Founded at the end of the Civil War, Wesley UMC is one of the leading black churches in Texas. Its Gothic, four-spired bell tower is one of the few Eastside landmarks visible from afar.
Wilshire Genesis Presbyterian Church 1507 Wilshire, 478-2565. Wilshire Child Development Center, a day-care center, is attached to this church. The yard is said to blossom with bluebonnets in the spring.
