Goode Barber Shop 1309 Chestnut, 477-0149. Ishmael Goode got his start right after leaving the service at the end of the WWII. Goode is still open full-time, but is down to one chair lit by a short fluorescent tube and crowded by a parked scooter and two lap dogs.

Style-Rite Beauty Salon 920-A E. 11th, 472-5731. The Style-Rite salon has been around since the early Sixties, and Augustine Williams has been a beautician even longer than that. They specialize in shampoo pressing and curling.

The East End Barber Shop 1719 E. 12th, 477-0122. Fifty years after it opened, this barber shop is still thriving, with five chairs, young, fresh faces wielding the clippers, and a radio playing R&B. Original East End barber George Walker still mans his chair there.
