Waving down cars as they zoom along Congress might get you a few offers for "dates," but it is not the most effectual way to procure a taxi. The local cab companies say they regularly pick up "flaggers" downtown, but if you need a cab at a specific time and place it's necessary to call ahead. If you insist on spontaneity, the best bet downtown is to walk to the cab stand at the corner of Sixth & Congress or to the nearest hotel. Rates are set by the city council at $1.50 for the first sixth of a mile and 20¢ for each sixth of a mile after that. A ride from downtown to the airport should run you about $8-10.

Capital Metro has a toll-free information line to help you. Let them know where you are and where you are going and they promise to get you to the right bus stand at the right time. One-way bus fare is 50¢. If you require a transfer, ask the driver as soon as you board. Capitol Metro also operates the 'Dillo, a free "trolly" service linking points of interest downtown with adjoining areas. Maps, guides, bus passes, and discount ticket books are available at area HEB grocery stores.

Known just about everywhere else as "hansom cabs," these throwbacks to the time of chivalry and animal husbandry take passengers on leisurely clippity-clop jaunts through old downtown. Knowledgeable drivers and hearty draft horses lead the way — all you have to do is relax and take in the scenery, the romance, and the history. Carriages generally cluster around the Driskill, Spaghetti Warehouse, the Radisson, the Four Seasons, and the Hyatt. If you are in need of a pickup in another area, just call.
