ARTWORKS, 1214 W. Sixth, 472-1550. Hand- painted and mouthblown Art Nouveau-style pate-de-verre lamps from France, as well as figurative sculpture in bronze by Bobbe Gentry, is on view through Sept. A Vintage Poster Show will be held Fri-Sat Sept 12-13, 10am-6pm, and Sun, Sept 14, noon-6pm. The exhibit features oversized posters by turn-of-the-century masters from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period, as well as pieces by contemporary artists Villemot and Razzia in the Deco style.

AUSTIN GALLERIES, 1219 W. Sixth, 495-9363. Two completely different styles of art are featured at the gallery through Sept - the artwork of Cal Gaspard is realistic and expresses familiar Hill Country scenes, while the art of Richard Luce is action-packed and opens a window into scenes of history.

AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART @ LAGUNA GLORIA, 3809 W. 35th, 458-8191. "Sydney Yeager: Art in Process," an innovative one-woman exhibition and educational program featuring Austin artist and teacher Sydney Yeager, is featured through Oct 19. The show includes three galleries of Yeager's current work and a fourth studio/salon where the artist creates her work on-site, interacts with viewers, and communicates with a broader audience through a specially designed Internet communications project. AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART, DOWNTOWN, 823 Congress, 495-9224. "Subversions/Affirmations: Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, A Survey," works by the contemporary Native American artist, is on view through Oct 12. The show features 36 paintings, drawings, and collages by Smith, whose works explore the contrasting iconography of popular culture with the reality of current Native American tradition. AUSTIN PRESENCE, 3736 Bee Caves , Ste. 5, 306-9636. Original paintings by Austin artists Barbara Brooks Clubb, Su Allen, and Sandy Barnes are on display through Sept 30 as part of a larger collection of original art in a variety of media.

BLUE ROAD STUDIO, 2210-F S. First, 326-8909. Visitors are welcome at the new studios of artist Joyce DiBona, who creates contemporary large oils, landscapes, and conceptual mannequins.

RUTH BORINSTEIN GALLERY, 3300 Bee Caves, Suite 700, 306-8848. "Le Gout du Bonheur... Recreations From a Suite of Happy," playful and erotic drawings by the late Pablo Picasso, is featured through Sept.

JULIA C. BUTRIDGE GALLERY, 1110 Barton Springs Rd, 397-1455. "AArCWORKS: Tools and Elements," an exhibition of works by members of the Architectural Artisans Collaborative, is on display through Sept 27. An assemblage of tools and works-in-progress will be featured, with an emphasis on raw forms, along with photographs by Paul Bardagjy - noted architectural photographer - capturing the participating studios at work.

CLAYWAYS POTTERY STUDIO, 5442 Burnet, 459-6445. The studio features the work of local potters, including Catherine Sherwood, Don Bebout, Diana Seidel, Cap Brooks, and more.

FLATBED PRESS GALLERY, 912 W. Third, 477-9328. "Day Dream Exchange," a retrospective of prints by celebrated Austin artist Patrick Wadley (1950-1992), is on view through Oct 2. Widely recognized for his complex etchings on glass panels and three-dimensional glass forms, Wadley was also a master printmaker. This show features 14 etchings and two monotypes.

MEXIC-ARTE, 419 Congress, 480-9373. An exhibition of works by renowned artist Mario Orozco Rivera is on view Sept 12-Nov 15. Born in 1930 in Mexico City, Rivera went on to study at prestigious schools in Mexico (including working with well-known muralist Diego Rivera), then later became the Director of the David Alfaro Siqueiros Mural Workshop. His works are found in private and museum collections across the globe, including Mexico, the U.S., Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, Chile, England, France, Germany, and more. Opening: Fri, Sept 12, 6pm. SCANLAN ART GALLERY, St. Stephen's School, 2900 Bunny Run, 327-1213. A 30-year retrospective of the art of Albert James Bonar, Jr., aka Jimmy Jalapeeno, is on view through Sept 27. Curated by Chuck Cooper, the show highlights impressive pieces from Jalapeeno's painting career from junior high school through college to the present.

SKYLIGHT GALLERY, 307 E. Fifth, 474-9005. Paintings by local artist/singer Stephanie Bradley are featured.

TARRYTOWN GALLERY, 2414 Exposition Blvd, 473-2552. New work by Marian Haigh, Ann Matlock, and Caprice Taniguchi is featured through Oct 9. Taniguchi uses wood, wax, and paper to sculpt forms reminiscent of bone and fossil; Haigh weaves and shapes clay into whimsical objects; and Matlock "draws" with fiber and thread in her woven tapestry paintings, as well as paints in watercolor.

UMLAUF SCULPTURE GARDEN & MUSEUM, 605 Robert E. Lee Rd, 445-5582. More than 130 works by renowned Austin sculptor Charles Umlauf are on permanent display.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Center for American History, 495-4515. "The Golden Age of Television: Archival Resources at the CAH," an exhibition showcasing examples from the Center's archival collection relating to the history of television news and the topic of blacklisting in the broadcasting industry. On view through Oct 10.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Huntington Art Gallery, 23rd & San Jacinto and 21st & Guadalupe, 471-7324. With more than 12,500 works of art, the Huntington is one of the top 10 university art museums in the U.S. The permanent collection features Western European and American Art, with three collections being particularly distinguished: The Contemporary Latin American Art Collection, The Mari and James A. Michener Collection of Twentieth- Century American Painting, and The Prints and Drawings Collection.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Huntington Art Gallery, 23rd & San Jacinto and 21st & Guadalupe, 471-7324. "Myth and Archetype in the Graphic Work of Jean Cocteau," an exhibition showcasing approximately 60 works by renowned French artist Jean Cocteau, is on view through Oct 19. The exhibit is the first substantial presentation of a 1995 gift of more than 1,000 works of art from the Severin Wunderman Museum.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Huntington Art Gallery, 23rd & San Jacinto and 21st & Guadalupe, 471-7324. "Spirited Journeys: Self-Taught Texas Artists of the Twentieth Century," over 150 works by 35 Texas "folk" artists, is on view through Oct 19. The exhibition investigates and documents these artists and their work, while also presenting for the first time a state-wide traveling exhibition that makes these works accessible to a wider audience.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Texas Memorial Museum, 2400 Trinity, 471-1604. "Craftsmen to the Kings: Rural Maya Stone Technology at Colha, Belize," an exhibition of photographs, site maps, stone tools of the ancient Mayan peoples, is on view through January 4, 1998. The exhibit highlights the research conducted by Dr. Thomas R. Hester, Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at UT, and Dr. Harry Shafer, Dept. of Anthropology at Texas A&M. A lecture by Dr. Hester will be held in conjunction with the exhibition on Wed, Sept 17, 7:30pm in the Bass Lecture Hall on the UT campus.

WOMEN & THEIR WORK GALLERY, 1710 Lavaca, 477-1064. "Small Deaths," an exhibition of large-scale toned and hand-colored photographs by Austin-based artist Kate Breakey, is on display through Sept 27. Breakey's large-scale photographs of dead birds, delicate moths, and withering flowers are meant to convey both the strength and fragility of life.

YARD DOG, 1510 S. Congress, 912-1613. "Johnnie Swearingen: Paintings From the Chappell Hill Collection," works from the Chappell Hill Historical Society's collection of pieces by the late Reverend Johnnie Swearingen, is on view through Oct 5. Swearingen drew on his life experiences, as well as the Bible and his religious convictions, for his subjects: farm scenes, buildings and homes in Brenham and Chappell Hill, biblical stories, religious narratives, and places he'd seen in his travels.

Artschtuff

TRAVELING WITH THE ANCIENTS is a special video series presented by the Austin Museum of Art, to be held at their downtown location, 823 Congress. The series features revealing and provocative tapes by artists and video- makers from indigenous communities around the world. Admission is $3 per event. DIVERSEARTS PRODUCTION GROUP presents its 1997-98 Season with an opening at the September Second Sunday Salon, held in the Little Gallery at the Heritage House, 810 E. 13th. Second Sunday Salons are held monthly at Heritage House, featuring live music, new works from local visual artists, and refreshments. This month features etched glass works by visual artist is Regina Thomas, proprietor of Graphic Glass. Musical entertainment will be provided by Robert Kraft and Glover Gill. FRIDA'S FIESTAS III, an annual fundraiser for Mexic-Arte Museum, will be presented at Fonda San Miguel Restaurant. Inspired by the dinner parties of the famous duo Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, the evening of dining and entertainment features traditional interior Mexican cuisine as served at Kahlo's table, selected and prepared by celebrity Master Chef Roberto Santibañez. A variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes will be presented. Musical entertainment will be provided by mariachi sensation Nydia Rojas. Cost is $60 ($50 museum members). WOMEN & THEIR WORK will present "The 1997 Whitney Biennial: Insider/Outsider ?," a slide show and panel discussion about the most influential and "dissed" exhibition in America, to be held at the W&TW Gallery, 1710 Lavaca. Panelists include Sarah Canright, Annette Lawrence, Ann Reynolds, Peter Saul, Margo Sawyer, and Victor Zamudio-Taylor. Tue, Sept 16, 6:30pm.

A MEXICAN MURAL TOUR will be offered by Mexic-Arte Museum as part of its continuing educational and cultural programs. Slated for Oct 15-20, the tour will showcase Mexico City's outstanding murals and museums located in the downtown area. Guided by Sylvia Orozco, executive director of the museum, participants will get an overview of the Mexican Mural Renaissance and the Mexican School of Art. Although the focus of the trip will be visual art, there will be plenty of time for shopping, entertainment, dining, and more. Cost is $695 per person and includes hotel accommodation for five days and nights, air fare from Austin, transportation to and from Mexico City Airport, and museum fees. THE 4TH ANNUAL RETABLO & EX-VOTO AUCTION at Mexic-Arte Museum is currently open for submissions. The artworks will go on display Mon, Dec 1 and then be auctioned on Fri, Dec 5. The event, celebrating one of the most sacred and popular Mexican art forms, will include retablos and ex-votos made by contemporary artists. Most of the proceeds will go to the museum (20% will be given to the artists). They welcome any type of materials, although they will offer a free sheet of metal for artists' use.
