The patio and nicely landscaped yard are pleasant places to do some coffee-enhanced studying and listen to poetry readings or live music.

Austin Chicken House(8) 600-A W. MLK, 481-1250. They'll give you that bird all kinds of ways. Fried, sandwiched, or fingered. They'll even fly super hot wings to you until 3am on the weekends.

Bagel Manufactory (D11) 2200 Guadalupe, 478-7655. Year in and year out, these bagels are voted the best by Chronicle readers and critics alike. Go straight for the honey wheat.

Banzai Japanese (D9) 2120 Guadalupe, 320-0657. Mushi! Mushi! It's teriyaki and sushi. The kids at Sound Exchange say it's a-okay. Chicken and tofu specialties.

Bertram's (118) 1601 Guadalupe, 476-2743. One of Austin's oldest commercial buildings (Bertram's Mercantile, c.1862) is now home to the Hispanic Texas cuisine of nationally known chef Miguel Ravago. Lunch, dinner and Ravago's famous Sunday brunch buffet. Private dining facilities for small, medium, and large groups.

Dirty Martin's Kum-Bak Place (74) 2808 Guadalupe, 477-3173. Neither the cooks nor the menu have changed much since this fabled joint opened in 1926. Hamburgers, chicken-fried steaks, and pork chops done on the griddle. Simple tator tots upgrade any meal. Cut the grease with a fresh-squeezed lemon- or limeade.

Famous stuffed grape leaves offer something different for the daring blue-collar gourmand.

Ruby's Barbecue (213) 512 W. 29th, 477-1651. The only barbecue joint in town serving hormone-free beef, Ruby's is a favorite among blues artists and rib lovers alike.

Thai Noodles House (63) 2602 Guadalupe, 494-1011. Five bucks gets you a big bowl of noodles with dozens of toppings, some of which are incendiary. Dine on the outdoor patio or call for deliveries. Live Thai music on Wednesday nights.
