COMEDY
THE LONE STAR IMPROV COMEDY JAMBOREE starts where the Big Stinkin' Internatiuonal Improv Festival left off, bringing together a host of improvisational comedy troupes from around the state for an orgy of on-the-spot, off-the-cuff comedy. As with the BSIIF, Austin troupe Monks' Night Out is the host company, and they've organized five shows featuring companies from our town (ComedySportz-Austin, KAIROS!, Only 90% Effective, and the Monks themselves), Dallas (Rubber Chicken and 4 Out of 5 Doctors), and San Antonio (The Oxymorons). The jamboree starts with one show Thu, then continues with two performances each, Fri & Sat. Two companies perform in each show. Thu, 8pm, Fri & Sat, 8 & 10pm, at Esther's Pool, 525 E. Sixth. 371-1715.

ESTHER'S FOLLIES takes a much-deserved holiday and Monks' Night Out fills the space with the Lone Star Improv Comedy Jamboree, or what I guess you could call its "Li'l Stinkin' Improv Festival." (see listing above).
THE VELVEETA ROOM hosts a variety of comic fun every week. This Thursday, while Monks' Night Out takes over the Esther's stage (see Lone Star Improv Comedy Jamboree listing), the Comedy Open Mike takes a holiday; the club is dark. This weekend only, with the Monks still improv-ing at Esther's, stand-up takes over. For four spellbinding shows, comic JR Brow breaks the Sound Barrier, making you believe you're really hearing scratchy recordings, hillbilly Zeppelin, and Barney Fife when it's only him. Fri & Sat, 9:30 & 11:30pm. $5. 521 E. Sixth. 469-9116.
