Artworks include silver and gold jewelry by Elizabeth Jean Bowlin; sculptural boxes by Brad Bowden; paper quilts by Kate Ward Thacker; wall sculptures by Barrett DeBusk; and ceramic bowls and vessels by William Melstrom.

ARTWORKS, 1214 W. Sixth, 472-1550. Vibrant Mediterranean scenes in oil by Italian artist Giovani Mancini are on display through August. Also featured are handblown vessels, vases, and bowls by John Cook, as well as a new selection of elegant stemware from the Depression Era.

AUSTIN GALLERIES, 1219 W. Sixth, 495-9363. "SouthwestArt 2/97," luminous Plein-Air paintings by Marlin Linville, is on display through Aug.

AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART, DOWNTOWN, 823 Congress, 495-9224. "Subversions/Affirmations: Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, A Survey," works by the contemporary Native American artist, is on view through Oct 12. The show features 36 paintings, drawings, and collages by Smith, whose works explore the contrasting iconography of popular culture with the reality of current Native American tradition. AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART @ LAGUNA GLORIA, 3809 W. 35th, 458-8191. "Tres Proyectos Latinos," a three-part exhibition curated by Benito Huerta, Kathy Vargas, and Victor Zamudio Taylor (with Henry Estrada), highlights Chicano and Latino artists whose work incorporates various styles and techniques that the curators found compelling and relevant to Texas art today. On view through Aug 10.

BLUE ROAD STUDIO, 2210-F S. First, 326-8909. Visitors are welcome at the new studios of artist Joyce DiBona, who creates contemporary large oils, landscapes, and conceptual mannequins.

RUTH BORINSTEIN GALLERY, 3300 Bee Caves, Suite 700, 306-8848. "Salvador Dali Festival!," etchings, lithographs, drawings, and woodcuts of the surrealist mater, is on view through August.

DOUGHERTY ARTS CENTER GALLERY, 1110 Barton Springs Rd, 397-1455. "La Tradición: Focus on Tejano Tradition," a photographic exhibition presented by Texas Folklife Resources, will be on view through Aug. The exhibit is comprised of 30 images by four Tejano photographers who have generated a body of work focusing on different aspects of traditional culture in the Tejano community.

GALERIE BLEUX, 213 W. Fourth, Suite 201, 469-1749. Artworks by Bale Creek Allen are currently on display. Mixed media pieces are featured, including works using shadowboxes, neon, and acrylic painting. Pen-and-ink relief prints by musician Thomas N. Watkins are also on view.

GALLERY AT SHOAL CREEK, 1500 W. 34th, 454-6671. Miniature watercolors of Russian life by Russian artist Lyuba Titovets is featured through Aug 28, as well as Summer florals in watercolor by Maurine Zook, and cowboy sketches in charcoal by Doug Higgins.

GALLERY LOMBARDI, 920 W. Third, 481-1088. "The Clone Invitational," an exhibition of works based on the present-day clone issue by selected artists, has been held over through Aug 15.

IC2 INSTITUTE, 2815 San Gabriel, 475-8900. "Studies for Nuclear Fusion," paintings by Herbert Long, are featured by appointment only through August 15.

IRONWOOD INDUSTRIES, 5120 Burnet Rd., 450-1933. Works by local artists Gabel Karsten, Brandon Ariel, Tommy Jackson, and Wells Mason are currently on view. The new gallery also features an on-site woodworking and metalworking studio (hard hats and steel-toed boots are recommended!).

L'ANTILLAISE GALLERY, 1800 W. Koenig, 206-3101. "Caribbscapes," a collection of works by local artist Ainsley Joseph, is on view through Aug. Joseph was this year's featured artist at the Old Pecan St. Festival. Also featured at the gallery are works by young Haitian-based artist Eddy Joseph. LAUGHING AT THE SUN, 2209 S. First, 326-4410. The second annual photography show, "A Different Perspective," will be on display through August. Over 30 Texas photographers will present a variety of images.

LYONS MATRIX GALLERY, 1712 Lavaca, 479-0068. "Dog Days Group Exhibit," a show of eclectic works by a variety of artists, is on view through Sept 6.

MAYFAIR & SPICEWOOD GALLERIES, 1206 W. 38th, 458-6575. Currently featured are new paintings by artists J.U. Salvant and Jay Rather, as well as works by Darnell Jones and Nancy Bandy. Spicewood is featuring a one-person show of paintings by Ruth Valerio, as well as new paintings by Al Brouillette, Jerry Seagle, Herb Rather, Gary Thornton, Carrie Ballard, and Vicki McMurry, and sculpture by Cindy Burleson.

METROPOLITAN GALLERY, 903 S. Lamar, 326-1611. Through August, the gallery features abstract photography by Steve Oleson; surreal acrylics by Doug Sweet; figurative oils and watercolors by Miles Mathis; and a new collection of Daryl Howard woodblock prints and embossings. A special one-day exhibition of national artists' work will be presented in a portfolio show, Thu, Aug 7, 5-8pm.

MEXIC-ARTE MUSEUM, 419 Congress, 480-9373. A one-person exhibition by Rolando Briseño is featured through Aug 23. Born and raised in the Mexican section of San Antonio, Briseño's work relates his affection for the Mexican-American culture of the Southwest, as well as his affinity for Mexican expressionists. In the back gallery, works by Chad Marsh will also be featured through Aug 23. Marsh, a UT graduate, is one of seven artists chosen for the 1997 Diversity & Emergence Series.

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, AUSTIN, 2525 W. Anderson in Northcross Mall, 457-8808. The Williamson County Art Guild Show is on view through August. Works by 22 artists are featured.

R. PEEPLES, JR. GALLERY, 1708 Guadalupe, 457-1052. The aggressive, cutting-edge designs of functional sculptor Jance C. Smith (professor at the University of Kansas), are on view through Sept 6. Also featured are museum-quality studio furniture and decorative art by acclaimed artists.

POSITIVE IMAGES, 1118 W. Sixth, 472-1831. The gallery features a wide selection of jewelry, art glass, exotic wood boxes, handmade books, lamps, clocks, sculpture, and more. Through Aug 15, necklaces from Martina Windells and new jewelry by Biba Schutz will be on display.

STUDIO H, 2209 S. First, 442-7055. Daryl G. Colburn, nationally-recognized non-ferrous metal sculptor, opens his studio by appointment. Ongoing classes and workshops are also offered.

UMLAUF SCULPTURE GARDEN & MUSEUM, 605 Robert E. Lee Rd, 445-5582. More than 130 works by renowned Austin sculptor Charles Umlauf are on permanent display in a xeriscaped garden and a small museum.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Center for American History, 495-4515. "The Golden Age of Television: Archival Resources at the CAH," an exhibition showcasing examples from the Center's archival collection relating to the history of television news and the topic of blacklisting in the broadcasting industry. On view through Oct 10.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Huntington Art Gallery, 23rd & San Jacinto and 21st & Guadalupe, 471-7324. With over 12,500 works of art, the Huntington is one of the top 10 university art museums in the U.S. The permanent collection features Western European and American Art, with three collections being particularly distinguished: The Contemporary Latin American Art Collection, The Mari and James A. Michener Collection of Twentieth-Century American Painting, and The Prints and Drawings Collection.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Leeds Gallery, Fourth Floor, Flawn Academic Center, 471-8944. "Sightings and Weather Prophets," West Texas landscapes by Frank Reaugh. On view through Aug 15. Also on view is "Confrontations: Portrait Drawings of Don Bachardy."

TARRYTOWN GALLERY, 2414 Exposition Blvd, 473-2552. New paintings by Roi James are featured at the gallery through Aug. From ethereal landscapes to moving figurative tableaux, James utilizes an "old master" style of heavy shadow, dramatic lighting effects, and built-up glazes.

WOMEN & THEIR WORK GALLERY, 1710 Lavaca, 477-1064. "Con/Text," an exhibition of drawings and installations by Annette Lawrence, is featured through August 16. Lawrence's drawings on paper, on the walls, and in rock on the floor, refer to the marking of time and the ways that language and simple mathematical signs can generate multiple meanings.

YARD DOG, 1510 S. Congress, 912-1613. "Isaac Smith's Folk Art Zoo," an exhibition of carved animals by the folk artist, is featured through August 24. Smith now resides in Dallas, but was born into a sharecropper's family in Louisiana. There he studied the many animals he saw, and incorporated those images into his carvings.

Beginning Aug 9, Zapotec Indian Juan Contreras will be at the shop weaving rugs on his loom, using the same techniques used in his village for centuries. Competitions

THE GALLERY @ 501, a new space in downtown Austin on the edge of the Sixth Street entertainment district, is accepting applications for upcoming shows. They are looking for art in any media, especially mixed media and sculpture. Only applications submitted with photos/slides will be considered (please do not bring actual pieces by!). THE AUSTIN VISUAL ARTS ASSOCIATION has issued a call for entries for their Fall Show, slated for Sept 20-Oct 12 at the ACA Gallery @ ArtPlex. The theme for this year's show is "Autumn." Artschtuff

ARTISTS AND ARTISANS interested in participating in collaborative projects at Plaza Saltillo are invited to an informative "get acquainted" meeting, sponsored by Olé Mexico! and Austin Art in Public Places. Participants are asked to bring some photographs of their art or craftwork to share. The meeting will be held at the Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center, Meeting Room, 2608 Gonzales. THE BANANA FESTIVAL is currently calling local artists and craftspeople to sign up for booth space. Sponsored by the Greater Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the M.E.D.I.C.O. Labor Day Banana Festival Committee, the festival may become the Largest Latin American Event ever to hit New Braunfels; slated for August 30- September 1. 480-0237.

A REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS from visual arts groups is currently underway, sponsored by The ArtPlex. Established visual arts groups in Austin are invited to submit proposals to manage the Gallery @ ArtPlex, a 1,600 square-foot gallery space (available rent-free). Proposal deadline is September 1.
