Hiking, Biking, and
Climbing Guidelines
- Austin is lucky to have such a rich, diverse recreational area so close
to the center of town. Hundreds of people use the trails along Barton Creek
every day. Hikers, joggers, boaters, climbers, spelunkers, and bikers can
all use the creek. But there are ground rules:
- Leave only footprints! Show the creek respect. Nothing disturbs the
beauty of the creek more than a pile of crumpled beer cans and cigarette
butts.
- Be responsible! Try to leave the creek better than you found it.
- If you see litter, pick it up and take it to the nearest trash can.
- The trails are open from 5am-10pm.
- No glass is allowed on the trails.
- Restrict use when the trail is muddy and when the creek is flooded.
- Don't go into caves by yourself. Go with an experienced spelunker and
take proper equipment.
- Dogs must be kept on a leash.
- Alcohol and drugs are not allowed in the park.
- Be alert! Watch and listen for joggers and bikers.
- Do not run or walk more than two abreast.
- Give the trail the same consideration you would to a narrow congested
roadway.
- If you see anything suspicious or have problems, call the Park Police
at 480-3028.
Guidelines for Cyclists
- Be courteous! Numerous complaints have been made about rude cyclists
on the greenbelt.
- Slow down! Excessive speed causes more accidents than any other factor.
Moderate your speed, particularly on weekends when the trails are crowded.
- Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
- Always give verbal warning when passing.
- Always pass on the left.
- Always ride single file.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Do not cut new trails. Cutting trees or vegetation in the park is considered
damage to city property, which is subject to fines of up to $20,000. Cyclists
have been cited for this in the past.
- If you see someone cutting new trails, call PARD Operations at 480-3030
or Park Police at 480-3028.
- Don't ride when the ground is soggy. Riding during or soon after heavy
rains causes the trail to erode prematurely.
Guidelines for Climbers
- Climbing is potentially the most dangerous activity you can do on Barton
Creek. Don't try climbing unless you are experienced, or are with someone
who has experience.
- If you want to learn more about climbing, contact UT Rec Sports,
- 471-1093, or Scott Harris of Mountain Madness at 443-5854. -- R.B
