AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART @ LAGUNA GLORIA, 3809 W. 35th, 458-8191. "Art Patterns," the 16th annual family exhibition at Laguna Gloria, is on view through May 4. This year's show explores American art and culture through contemporary art patterns, focusing on artists who use patterns and repeated decorative designs. The event will commemorate the birthday of Ney, whose life-size portraits of the Texas heroes are displayed in the museum, the Texas State Capitol, and the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. A gallery of fine contemporary crafts, the shop features a wide selection of jewelry, art glass, exotic wood boxes, handmade books, lamps, clocks, and soft sculpture. Also on view are original watercolors and copper plate etchings by internationally recognized artist KiKi. A Valentine Show will be on view through March 1, featuring one-of-a-kind jewelry by 12 artists.

Center for American History, Sid Richardson Hall, Unit 2, 495-4515. "New Handbook of Texas," an exhibit exploring the development of this new historical encyclopedia, is on view through March, 1997. "Crusade in Caricature: The Political Cartoons of Congressman Bob Eckhardt," political cartoons created by the former congressman throughout his career, is featured through March, 1997.
Huntington Art Gallery, 23rd & San Jacinto and 21st & Guadalupe, 471-7324. With over 12,500 works of art, the Huntington is one of the top 10 university art museums in the U.S. The permanent collection features Western European and American Art, with three collections being particularly distinguished: The Contemporary Latin American Art Collection, The Mari and James A. Michener Collection of Twentieth-Century American Painting and The Prints and Drawings Collection.
The Huntington has opened its 1997 exhibition calendar with the contemporary exhibition, "Out of Bounds: New Work by Eight Southeast Artists." The show features experimental work in a wide variety of media, including painting, sculpture, and multi-media installations. Artists include Luis Cruz Azaceta, Radciffe Bailey, Hoang van Bui, Dawn DeDeaux, Edouard Duval-Carrié, Eduardo Kac, Elizabeth King, and Terri Lindbloom. Over the course of the exhibit, six of the eight artists will visit Austin to install and discuss their works. Call for a schedule of events.

Texas Memorial Museum, 2400 Trinity, 471-1604. "Between Empires: Turks of Central Asia 1850-1925," a traveling exhibition featuring 75 archival and contemporary photographs focusing on Central Asia, is on view through March 29. A round-table discussion will be held Wed, Feb 19, 3:30-5pm, at the Texas Union Governors Room on the UT campus. Call for details.
WILD ABOUT MUSIC, 710 W. Sixth, 708-1700. February features blues-inspired works from renowned Austin artist Greg Anderson, including a trio of original acrylic on canvas paintings, and several acrylic on plexiglass portraits of legendary blues artists. The gallery also features 300-plus original artworks by over 40 artists - all with a musical motif.
WOMEN & THEIR WORK GALLERY, 1710 Lavaca, 477-1064. "Conversation Pieces/Short Stories from Long-Term Memory," an installation by Kathy Lovas that confronts the issues of aging, memory, and photographic truth, is on view through March 29. Through a combination of photographs, furniture, and books created by Lovas, the viewer engages with the recollections and concerns of an ailing women whose eyesight and short-term memory have faded.

TEXAS FOLKLIFE RESOURCES (TFR) is currently accepting applications for its Apprenticeships in the Folk Arts program. TFR will make a limited number of awards of approximately $1,000 each for qualified apprentices to study intensively with Texas master folk artists. Apprentices must already have some skill in the folk art form and know the master artist with whom they desire to study.
