Art Openings

AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART @ LAGUNA GLORIA, 3809 W. 35th, 458-8191. "Wildlife," an exhibition of amazing and fantastic work by The Art Guys (Michael Galbreth and Jack Massin), will be on view through Jan 26. Due to the bad weather a couple of weekends ago, the museum had to cancel the show's opening reception. Thus, a special closing reception for the Art Guys' show will be held Sun, Jan 26, 1-4pm.

DOUGHERTY ARTS CENTER GALLERY, 1110 Barton Springs Rd, 397-1472. "Heritage," a multi-disciplinary event and exhibition exploring three artists' ethnicity, is on view through Feb 24. Artists include Michael Ray Charles, Carolyn Manosevitz, and René Marquez. Opening: Wed, Jan 29, 6-8pm.

DRISKILL HOTEL, 604 Brazos, 415-2653 or 457-0000. The Museum of Fine Arts, Austin, is sponsoring "The Pastel Show." The exhibit features pastel works by Dashiell Allen and Marion Richards. Opening: Sat, Jan 25, 5-8pm.

MEXIC-ARTE, 419 Congress, 480-9373. "Voices and Visions," an exhibition of artwork by Regina Vater and David Medalla, is featured through Feb 17. Opening: Thu, Jan 30, 7-9pm, featuring a gallery talk with both artists at 8pm.

ALTERNATE CURRENT ART SPACE, 2209 S. First, 443-9674. "Painting by Divination," small paintings by Mark Garrison, is on view through Feb 6.

ARTWORKS, 1214 W. Sixth, 472-1550. Through January, the gallery features handwoven scarves, shawls and throws by Cynthia Krause, Gunther, and Textillery; fused art-glass plates and bowls by Kathleen Ash; etched crystal bowls by Schlanser; and handmade jewelry designs in precious and semi-precious stone by Shauna Sikorski.

AUSTIN GALLERIES, 1219 W. Sixth, 495-9363. "Suari's Abstract Expressionism," works by Spanish artist Josep Suari, is on view through January. Suari's canvases are said to "come alive with vibrant color, spontaneous brushwork, and evocative images."

AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART, DOWNTOWN, 823 Congress, 495-9224. "Fresh Ink: Austin Print Workshops," an exhibition recognizing the variety and volume of limited-edition, original prints that are being created in the collaborative print-making workshops of Austin, is on view through Apr 13. Works are featured by artists from around the world who have worked with local master printers to produce a wonderful variety of etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, screen-prints, and monotypes.

The works focus on the iconography of hunting and fishing or the recreational side of outdoor activity. AVENUE GALLERY, 1510 S. Congress, 442-3600. The gallery features works by local and national artists. Currently on view is a show of works by Liz Conces Alen, Hugh Daly, and James Fitzgerald.

RUTH BORINSTEIN GALLERY, 3300 Bee Caves, Suite 700, 306-8848. Currently on view is a premiere showing in Austin of "The Genesis of Guernica," a rare portfolio of lithographs pulled from original sketches executed by Pablo Picasso in preparation for his masterpiece, Guernica (depicting the bombing of the town of Guernica, Spain). Also: graphics by Miro, Dali, Chagall, Whistler, Cassatt, Renior, and more.

CLAYWAYS POTTERY STUDIO, 5442 Burnet Rd., 459-6445. The gallery features Texas potters, including Ishmael and Bud Soto, Fletcher Starbuck, Paige Shelton, Kit Adams, Diana Seidel, Katherine Sherwood, Don Bebout, Paul Uhl, Cap Brooks, and Kay York.

CORONADO STUDIOS, 1707 E. Sixth, 322-0109. New, bigger and better paintings by Austin artist/musician Ethan Azarian are currently on view. Bold, colorful, mostly primitive work, with many a salute to Salvador Dali and pop art. Azarian's work has progressed significantly over the past few years; his sense of color has widened, and his brushstroke technique has tightened up. Subject matter has expanded from his trademark space and UFO scenes (though they still appear) to a more personal look at the urban landscape and the home. It'll be interesting to see where he goes next. Check this show out and see what you think. As well, don't miss some interesting work by Sam Coronado in the side room. -- Ed.

FIRE ISLAND HOT GLASS STUDIO, 3401 E. Fourth, 389-1100. The gallery features handblown perfume bottles, paperweights, glassware, ornaments, oil lamps, vases, and more. Visitors are welcome to observe the alchemy in progress on Saturdays, 9am-noon.

FLATBED PRESS GALLERY, 912 W. Third, 477-9328. "On the Mark," a two-person exhibition of prints by Laurence Scholder and Trevor Huskey, is featured through Feb 21. While the two artists' works differ in their exploration of mark-making in the vocabulary of printmaking, both insist on the basic integrity of the mark in their work. They believe "the mark," the very foundation of art-making, is "inherently abstract, and yet is the most compelling communicator of life."

GALERIA SIN FONTERAS, 1701 Guadalupe, 478-9448. A new exhibit of works produced in Austin print workshops -- running concurrently with the Austin Museum of Art's "Fresh Ink" exhibition -- is on view through April. The show focuses on the extraordinary variety and volume of quality works being created in local workshops.

GALLERY AT SHOAL CREEK, 1500 W. 34th, 454-6671. Currently on view are oil paintings by Linda Keyser Smith; bronze works by Shirley Thomson Smith; new works by Carroll Collier; monotypes by Priscilla Hoback; hand-carved folk art by Mark Kluck; and more.

GALLERY OF THE HILLS, 7739-H Northcross Dr., 452-2794. Watercolors of Texas scenes by Jan Wright, watermedia by Carol Light, and works in clay by Ginger Rhodes Hurst are currently on display. Also featured is bronze sculpture by Bill Worrell; prints and serigraphs by G. Harvey and J.D. Challenger; pastels by Gaylynn Sneed; oils by Greg Phillips; and a collection of cartoons by Ben Sargent, Sam Hurt, and Milburn Taylor.

LAUGHING AT THE SUN, 2209 S. First, 326-4410. "Found Object Show," innovative works by a variety of artists using found objects, is on view through Feb 22. From car engines to electrical components, the exhibit features works in sculpture, photography, metal etchings, rock rubbings, collage, and much more.

LYONS MATRIX GALLERY, 1712 Lavaca, 479-0068. An invitational exhibition of works curated by the gallery is on view through Feb 22, including a special showing of works on paper by Patrick Wadley. Featured artists include Belinda Casey, Ricardo Hernandez, Constance Kelley, Eve Larson, Katy Nail, and many more wonderful artists.

MAYFAIR & SPICEWOOD GALLERIES, 1206 W. 38th, 458-6575. Currently on view at Mayfair: Paintings by Kathy Hinson, Vicki McMurry, J.U. Salvant, and Jay Rather, as well as photography by Laura Calfee. At Spicewood: paintings by Gary Thornton, Herb Rather, Jerry Seagle, Carrie Ballard, Ann Templeton, Al Brouillette, and sculpture by Charles Umlauf and Cindy Burleson.

MEXIC-ARTE, 419 Congress, 480-9373. "Voices and Visions," an exhibition of artwork by Regina Vater and David Medalla, is featured through Feb 17. Vater and Medalla work in a variety of media to reveal the creative process to their viewers, which they believe expands the mind, heart, and soul. Pieces incorporate installations, video installations, visual poetry, computer graphics, and performances. Participatory activities in the gallery will be held throughout the exhibition's run, including: A Gallery Event w/David Medalla, Fri, Feb 7, 8pm; and A Panel Discussion on Transmedia, Sat, Feb 15, 7pm. Opening: Thu, Jan 30, 7-9pm, featuring a gallery talk with both artists at 8pm.

J.R. MOONEY GALLERIES, 10000 Research, Arboretum, Suite 130, 343-2087. January features "New Year -- New Directions in Art," an eclectic display of new, original paintings by a variety of artists, including works by Janet Campbell, Judith Graves, Mark Keathley, Randy Peyton, and Mark Pettit.

PRO-JEX GALLERY, 109 E. Fifth, 472-7707. "Nude Works IV," the fourth annual nude photography exhibit, is on view through Feb 14. The show will feature over 16 different photographers and their interpretations of the nude figure. Black and white, hand-colored, liquid light, and photo transfers are just some of the mediums that will be presented.

SCANLAN ART GALLERY, St. Stephen's School, 2900 Bunny Run, 327-1213. "Substance," an installation by Austin sculptor John Christensen, is on view through Jan 26. Christensen has designed the installation with special sensitivity to the gallery's limestone and its east-light windows, and the work focuses on the juxtaposition of heavy and light objects.

TARRYTOWN GALLERY, 2414 Exposition Blvd, 473-2552. An exhibition of new work by Austin artists Margie Crisp and Dianne Grammer is on view through Feb 15. The show explores new directions taken by both artists in painting, drawing, prints, and pastels.

UMLAUF SCULPTURE GARDEN & MUSEUM, 605 Robert E. Lee, 445-5582. Outdoor museum features more than 130 sculptures by the late Charles Umlauf.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS

Center for American History, Sid Richardson Hall, Unit 2, 495-4515. "New Handbook of Texas," an exhibit exploring the development of this new historical encyclopedia, is on view through March, 1997. "Crusade in Caricature: The Political Cartoons of Congressman Bob Eckhardt," political cartoons created by the former congressman throughout his career, is featured through March, 1997.

Huntington Art Gallery, 23rd & San Jacinto and 21st & Guadalupe, 471-7324. With over 12,500 works of art, the Huntington is one of the top 10 university art museums in the U.S. The permanent collection features Western European and American Art, with three collections being particularly distinguished: The Contemporary Latin American Art Collection, The Mari and James A. Michener Collection of Twentieth- Century American Painting and The Prints and Drawings Collection.

The Huntington has opened its 1997 exhibition calendar with the contemporary exhibition, "Out of Bounds: New Work by Eight Southeast Artists." The show features experimental work in a wide vareity of media, including painting, sculpture and multi-media installations. Artists include Luis Cruz Azaceta, Radciffe Bailey, Hoang van Bui, Dawn DeDeaux, Edouard Duval-Carrié, Eduardo Kac, Elizabeth King, and Terri Lindbloom. Over the course of the exhibit, six of the eight artists will visit Austin to install and discuss their works. Call for a schedule of events.

WOMEN & THEIR WORK GALLERY, 1710 Lavaca, 477-1064. New paintings by Cynthia Lin are on view through Feb 15. The Dallas artist's calligraphic patterns, drips, splashes, and rich color are said to create layers of tactile and visual complexity. As well, Lin draws upon her own experience of assimilation into American culture to deliver visual metaphors.

YARD DOG, 1510 S. Congress, 912-1613. "Jesus, New Orleans, and the State of Texas," paintings by New Orleans artist Reginald Mitchell, is currently featured. Mitchell, 28, is a folk artist of growing national/international acclaim whose imaginative, abstract work explores Texas subjects, New Orleans buildings, and biblical scenes.

503 COFFEE BAR, 503 W. Oltorf, 462-0804. "Deus ex Machina," a new series of works by transplanted Parisian artist E. Vedrine, is on view through January. The unconventional paintings are disturbing portraits of tortured figures, and her works have been compared to Francis Bacon and H.R. Giger.

AMY'S ICE CREAM, 1012 W. Sixth, 480-0673. "Fruit for Bats," acrylic paintings on canvas by Amy Pancake, is on view through January.

AUSTIN JAVA CO., 1206 Parkway, 476-1829. "Post-Paris Paintings," a collection of oils by Nathan Jensen and other artworks by Lori Lejeune, is currently on view.

EDGE CITY CAFE, 10000 Research, Ste. 139, 342-2239. Acrylic paintings by Jennifer Chenoweth, abstract artworks by Andy Fuertsch, multi-media artwork by up-and-coming Austin artist Owen Towles, and photographs by Leslie Hubacher are on view through January.

Competitions

ALTERNATE CURRENT ARTSPACE is seeking submissions for "The Sacred and the Profane," a multi-media event to be held in March. REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE ART INSTITUTE OF HOUSTON will visit Austin, making their stop at the Doubletree Hotel, 6505 N. I-35.
