This is The Austin Chronicle's 13th annual Musicians Register. Its arrival no
longer falls on its birthday -- it moved last year from November to February to be
more current for the South by Southwest Music & Media Conference, sort of like
"observed" holidays. And as the Register enters adolescence, it takes on its own
personality, this year manifesting its growth through a record number of entries. The Musicians Register was originally conceived in 1983 by Senior Account Executive Carolyn Phillips, who thought it would be a good idea for The Austin Chronicle to provide a single source for local musicans to list themselves and their bands; thus the Musicians Register was born. What started out with about 160 names then has more than quadrupled since and it's kind of fun to look back in the old registers, their now-yellowed pages crackling with tender nostalgia. Look, here's when Jimmie Vaughan still played with the Thunderbirds. And Stevie Ray Vaughan when Lou Ann was still part of Double Trouble. Alejandro Escovedo in Rank & File, then the True Believers. Dan Del Santo. Little Charlie Sexton, Monte Warden's first band, Paul Minor's teenage band, Two Nice Girls' lineup reading like superstars.... What seems like just yesterday is now history in those old registers; when I look through this year's Musicians Register, I hear the names of tomorrow. Whew. Traditions don't just create themselves, though -- the Musicians Register is the product of very hard work on the part of a tolerant production staff. Much credit goes to Chris Eager for his diligent entry work; to Dave Cook, Kate Messer, and Lee Nichols for labor-intensive proofreading; to Nisa Sharma, Doug St. Ament, Danielle Scugoza, Brian Barry, Ben Plimpton, Laurie Powers, Taylor Holland, and Shadrock Roberts for oh-so-patient production work; to Laxman Gani for interpreting the Web entries; to Laura Pruter and her crew for organizing the Musicians Supper at Threadgill's; and to Nick Barbaro and Louis Black for believing in the idea in the first place.
