This extraordinary exhibition was assembled during the last 40 years by collector Fred Marer.

GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER MUSEUM, 1165 Angelina, 477-9660. "Visual Delight," 35 works of whimsical, spiritual, and technical art by Henry C. Porter, is on display through Dec 2.
Porter is said to be one of the most creative, original, and prolific African-American artists on the scene today.

CLARKSVILLE POTTERY & GALLERIES, 9772 Great Hills Tr, 794-8580 and 4001 N. Lamar, 454-9079. "Holiday Colors," the 19th annual open house of the galleries, will be held November 24-26. "Serie '94-'95," works from the serigraph print program sponsored by La Peña, the City of Austin Commission on the Arts, and under the Auspices of the City of Austin Texas Commission on the Arts, is currently on view. FIRE ISLAND HOT GLASS STUDIO, 3401 E. Fourth, 389-1100. The studio and gallery features hand-blown perfume bottles, paperweights, glassware, ornaments, oil lamps, vases, and much more. Visitors may observe the alchemy in process - glassblowing demonstrations are held Saturdays, 9am-noon.

"Signifying Nothing," an exhibition of lithographs, etchings, and relief prints by Margaret Simpson and Tom Druecker, is on display through December. Simpson, professor of print-making at St. Edward's University, and Druecker, a recent MFA graduate in printmaking from UT, bring to the gallery a highly unusual exhibit of collaborative and individually produced prints which were created over the last six months.

GALLERY AT SHOAL CREEK, 1500 W. 34th, 454-6671. On view at the gallery are new architecturals and landscapes in oils by Carroll Collier, Marlin Linville, and Jerry Ruthven; bronze sculpture by Sandy Scott; and whimsical ceramics by Teri Vance.

Zamarripa's work is inspired by Guadalajara's colorful market places, churches, barrios, and people that have influenced his life and perspective.

RAMIREZ GALLERY, 5535 Burnet, 302-0770. Currently on view are leather sculpture by Dominque Hass, as well as artwork by Lorriane Koester and LaVonne Simpson. Spirit dolls and pottery by Angela Whiteside are also featured.

RIVER CITY REHEARSAL/GALLERY, 408 Congress, 472-8957. Through November, the studio will feature the works of Beverly Deutsch, the official photographer of the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas. Her show, "Figurative Passions," is a collection of oils, mixed media, and photographs.

SCANLAN ART GALLERY, St. Stephen's School, 2900 Bunny Run, 327-1213. "Ancient Impulse: Wall Drawings by Holly Moe, Bettie Ward, and Sydney Yeager," site-specific works on the gallery walls by these three women artists, is on view through January 7.

TARRYTOWN GALLERY, 2414 Exposition Blvd, 473-2552. An exhibition of recent works by noted Austin artist Julie Speed is featured through
December 2.

TEXAS FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION BLDG., 700 Congress, 479-6176. "The Red Hot Show," the Texas Fine Art Association's Eighth Annual Art Exhibition and Benefit Auction, is an exhibition of artworks created by 63 leading Texas artists, architects, and designers from 19 cities who have accepted TFAA's invitation to create an artwork based on the "red hot" theme for exhibition and auction. Included in the show are contemporary artworks in painting, drawing, assemblage, and sculpture. The exhibit will be on view through December 2 at TFAA's new building, 700 Congress. The Gala Benefit and Auction Party will be held Sat, December 2, 6-10pm. A live auction of all the exhibited artworks will be conducted by a professional auctioneer. Vintage wines and an hors d'oeuvres buffet will be featured, courtesy of Mezzaluna, Bitter End Bistro & Brewery, and Granite Cafe. A door prize of a round-trip ticket for two was donated by America West Airlines.

UMLAUF SCULPTURE GARDEN & MUSEUM, 605 Robert E. Lee, 445-5582. "Beyond 3D: Textures and Tones in Sculpture," an exhibition of photographs by Alan J. Herbert, is on display through March. In addition to Herbert's exhibit, over 130 sculptures by renowned Austin sculptor Charles Umlauf are also featured.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS

Perry-Castañeda Library, 495-4144. "A Naturalist's Tour of Texas," an exhibit highlighting the diversity of the landscape, flora, and fauna of Texas, is now on view in the lobby of the library. Featured are the biotic regions of Texas with accompanying illustrations.

Huntington Art Gallery, 23rd & San Jacinto and 21st & Guadalupe, 471-7324. The gallery, with a permanent collection of nearly 10,000 works of art, is considered one of the top-10 university art museums in the nation. Featuring 37,000 square feet, the Huntington has two locations on the UT campus (see above). Admission is free.

"The Early Prints of Edvard Munch," an exhibition featuring 33 works revealing the power and innovation of one of the leading figures in the early development of modern art, is on view through Dec 15. The Norwegian artist is probably best known for his disturbing work, "The Scream."
"The 57th Annual Art Faculty Exhibition," featuring a wide range of media, is on display through December 15. More than 40 faculty artists, many of whom have received national and international recognition, have contributed over 100 works to the exhibition.

Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, 21st & Guadalupe, 471-8944. "The Company They Kept: Alfred A. and Blanche W. Knopf, Publishers," a year-long exhibition exploring the profound impact that the publishing firm of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., has had on American literary culture, is on display through Dec 22. The exhibit is in the Leeds Gallery, fourth floor, Flawn Academic Center.

"Magic: A Brief History of the Unknown," featuring a wide range of materials from the magical traditions, is on view through Dec 8.

"Gendered Territory: Photographs of Women by Julia Margaret Cameron," over 60 original photo-graphs that explore Cameron's portrayal of women and children, is on view through Feb 6, 1996.

AUSTIN JAVA CO., 1206 Parkway, 476-1829. "Polyphonic Painting," oil and acrylic paintings by Woody Cornwell, is on view through Dec 25. Cornwell's work explores "simultaneous rhythms; counterpoint and cacophony."

CAFEZINO, 5414 Parkcrest, 453-CAFE. "Open Letter to Your Minds," a photography exhibition of works by Benjamin Johnson, is on display through November. The show features eclectic images focusing on aircraft, ships, and vehicles.

FORRAY'S, 2809 S. First, 467-8988. "Dreamer," new works by Austin artist Arleen R. Polite, is on display through December 15.

GRANITE CAFE, 2905 San Gabriel, 472-8524. Oils and watercolors by ACC Faculty member Eileen McGee Pestorius will be on display through December 10.

JOEL T'S CAFE & DELI, 4101 Guadalupe, 453-8482. On display are color photographs of Spain, Mexico, and Texas by Austin photographer James Conrad Shea, through December.

LAS MANITAS CAFE, 211 Congress, 477-6007. "Into the Mystic," works by internationally-known artist Marsha Gómez, is featured through December. Gómez, who has worked with clay for 20 years and has taught claywork for 15, has combined clay, handmade paper, and metal to create her spiritual and visionary images.

TEXAS FRENCH BREAD, 2900 Rio Grande, 477-1796. The shop will host an exhibition featuring a collection of prints by the W.P.A. (Women Printmakers of Austin), through December 12. W.P.A. is a group of 26 women printmakers living and working in the Austin area. The show provides examples of a wide range of printmaking techniques, including monotype, intaglio, lithography, serigraphy, digital imaging, woodcut, lino-cut, and combinations thereof.

WEST LYNN CAFE, 1110 West Lynn, 482-0950. "Spectacular," artworks by Doris Bickley, Keating, Guy Juke, and Susan Whithers, is on display through December 27.

Austin Art in Public Places is currently celebrating their 10th anniversary, and in commemoration of that event they are presenting a show of small works by 36 of the artists who have been commissioned or had works purchased for display through the program. On view through January 4, 1996.

ELECTRIC LOUNGE, 302 Bowie, 476-FUSE. Images by talented local photographer Michael Crawford are on display through December.

HIATUS DELUXE, 3703 Kerbey Ln., 302-5265. "In Her Eyes," a series of female portraits by Austin photographer Susan Gaetz, is on view through December.

OFF THE WALL, 1704 S. Congress, 445-4701. Featured at the shop are handcrafted works in wood, silver, and glass by artisans from Austin and around the world. Bronze and sterling silver jewelry by Boyd Johnson and one-of-a-kind clocks in wood by Wolf Sittler are also on view.

Competitions

THE AUSTIN VISUAL ARTS ASSOCIATION announces its Eighth Annual Art @ Large Billboard Art Competition for a show featuring the work of an Austin area artist and a collaborative piece created by children under age 12. Winning works will be reproduced by Austin Outdoor Advertising painters, unveiled on March 7, 1996, and "hung" on Austin streets for six months. Deadline: Nov 30. 454-3077.

MEXIC-ARTE MUSEUM is accepting entries for the exhibit "Latino Artists," to be shown concurrently with the exhibition "Latin American Books Arts," scheduled for January 19-March 2, 1996.
