Since the announcements of the great information highway were made, people have been stampeding to be the first to create the on-ramps. Jeff Evans and his InfiNet BBS present Austin a green way to the Internet with a variety of areas for green building, health and consciousness, and a soon-to-come education area.
A collection of on-line publications are available, including Wind Energy Weekly and The Earth Times, with EFFector On-Line and GSD&M Green Reader coming soon. KGSR's Cecilia Nasti has her feature "Earth Update" in its own area with comments from listeners and, now, readers. A bevy of environmental organizations have a toe-hold on the net here as well, including the Austin Green Building Program, Austin Nature Center, Austin Sierra Club, Ecology Action, Hill Country Foundation, Save Barton Creek, and Sustainable Builders Coalition.
The gems of this system are the conferences. The Sustainable Sources conference has sections for green building, planting, transportation, energy, recycling, community, politics, and more. The Health and Consciousness conference covers a variety of topics from accupuncture to homeopathy, AyorVed to Reiki. Both have a selection of feeds from UseNet newsgroups. Future plans include Education On-Line - with a parent/teacher forum, Internet training, and a home-schooling network with resources for parent-teachers from the American Institute for Learning.
Built on the First Class system, InfiNet provides a fast and friendly graphical interface for Macs and PCs that looks and feels much like the usual desktop setup but without the usual installation blues. InfiNet can also be accessed from any text-based term program, and the First Class interface program can then be downloaded. Reach InfiNet by modem at 301-2151.
