The Territory Schedule

Each program is a half-hour long and airs every Friday night in Austin on KLRU-TV (channel 18/cable 9) at 10pm (barring any last-minute programming changes). www.swamp.org.

OCTOBER 20

"My Grandmother Ironed the King's Shirts" (Torill Kove, Canada, 10:35 min., 1999) This animated comedy interweaves histories of the artist's family and the Norwegian throne.

"The Day Stashi Ran Out of Money" (Sonia Bridge, Canada, 4:53 min., 1999) Hand-drawn animation intercut with newsreels of WWII.

"Home" (Elizabeth Downer, New York, 15 min., 1999) A young Native American woman confronts memories of childhood in a quest to reunite with her family.

OCTOBER 27

"Human Remains" (Jay Rosenblatt, California, 29:27 min., 1998) This experimental documentary presents portraits of five infamous dictators.

NOVEMBER 3

"Global Groove" (Nam June Paik and John Godfrey, New York, 28:30 min., 1973) Radical manifesto on the media-saturated global village. Playing in conjunction with AMoA's "The New Frontier: Art and Television, 1960-65," through Nov. 19.

NOVEMBER 10

"Springs Symphony" (Karen Kocher, Texas, 9:30 min., 1999) Celebration of Austin's beloved and beleaguered Barton Springs.

"Cold Pieces" (Seoungho Cho, New York, 11:20 min., 1999) Meditation on water.

"Die Villa/The Villa" (Peter Roloff, Germany, 6 min., 1998) The lives, objects, and emotions that intersect within one important site.

NOVEMBER 17

"The Pills/Les Pastilles" (Manfred Beger, Germany, 13:30 min., 1998) French romantic farce following a seriously mismatched couple.

"When the Day Breaks" (Wendy Tilby w/ Amanda Forbis, Canada, 9:40 min., 1999) Animated creatures convey the small miracles and tragedies of our everyday lives.

"Dream" (Masayo Nishimura, New York, 2:30 min., 1999) An operatic moment on a subway platform evokes thoughts of a romance.

NOVEMBER 24

"Break and Enter" (Amanda Brotchie, Australia, 8:30 min., 1999) Two unlikely characters swap identities in this burlesque comedy.

"The Other Woman" (Casey Kelly, Texas, 18:30 min., 2000) A simple man's dream girl becomes a living doll.

DECEMBER 15

"Blood Orange Sky" (Jem Cohen, New York, 26 min., 1999) In this observational chronicle by the master of the urban documentary, Cohen presents Sicily as both a living vessel and a haunted victim of its past.

DECEMBER 22

"Maaz" (Christian Volckman, France, 8:30 min., 1998) Surreal exploration of one man's search for genuine human contact.

"Man Looks at Woman, Woman Looks at Man" (Nathalie Casale and Pavel Semtchenko, The Netherlands, 18 min., 2000) Meditation on how women and men see each other.

DECEMBER 29

"Elevator World" (Mitchell Rose, California, 3:49 min., 1999) Satire of the curious rituals of elevator etiquette.

"Locked" (Filipe Alcalda, England, 4:11 min., 1998) Portrayal of self-induced imprisonment.

"Deleriouspink" (Sebastian Castillo and Andrew Busti, Texas, 3:35 min., 1999) Man meets copy machine.

"Hospital Fragment" (Guy Maddin, Canada, 3:30 min., 1999) This slice-of-life cinema depicts post-operative recovery.

"A Barrel of Paul Klee" (Devon Damonte, Massachusetts, 4:36 min., 1998) Tribute to Swiss surrealist painter Paul Klee.

"Mirror" (Keith Sanborn, New York, 5 min., 2000) Meditation on movie heroines.

"Flip Film" (Ellen Ugelstad and Alfonso Alvarez, California, 1 min., 1999) Portrait of postmodern city life.

JANUARY 5

"The Shampoo King" (Ellen Spiro, Texas, 16:30 min., 2000) Sardonic homage to Citizen Kane about a self-made and self-absorbed Texas legend.

"Inside the Eye of Scorpio Rising" (Jon Ausbrooks, Texas, 11 min., 2000) This split-screen documentary, a work-in-progress, captures the mind of Kenneth Anger and the making of his avant-garde classic, Scorpio Rising.

JANUARY 12

"Loaves and Fishes" (Nancy Schiesari, Texas, 28 min., 2000) Amparo Garcia Crow scripted and stars in this portrait of a family -- and a family business -- on the verge of demolition.

JANUARY 19

"Visual Velocity: The Work of Stan VanDerBeek" (David Donnelly, Texas, 26 min., 2000) This documentary traces the career of experimental pioneer Stan VanDerBeek.

JANUARY 26

"The Speed of Light" (Anne-Marie Hess, Texas, 12 min., 2000) A difficult boy and his exasperated mother cross swords on a car trip.

"The Scarecrow" (Alexander Kott, Russia, 15 min., 2000) Magical realism and childhood fantasy merge in this story about a boy who loses a friend but finds other dreams to pursue.
