"If you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait a few minutes," was actually something Mark Twain said about New England and probably something that someone else said about somewhere else long before that. No matter, the sentiment still holds. If Summer '98 is anything like last year's, we are in for a mild, luscious babe of a season, packed with clear skies as far as the eye can see and sprinkled with just enough cooling rain to keep the springs and spirits flowing.

This year, we decided that one issue of "Summer Fun" was just not enough for a town as brimming with events as Austin. Beginning with this issue and for the next three, The Austin Chronicle will offer up features to help make your summer blaze. This week, our center pull-out section, "101 Swimming Holes," updates a guide we presented back in 1989. Right here on this page, Nicole Kleman and I have culled a list of cool in-town events. In the next few weeks, we'll give you guides to Summer Movies, Summer Reading, and a special take on travels to our neighbor Mexico by Chronicle writers, photographers, and artists. We hope you enjoy our "Summer Fun" issues and that you and yours have a blast all summer long. -- Kate X Messer
