Good food moves to the 'burbs

Let's start with the good: I would be hard-pressed to find better home fries than the ones that came with my French Toast Break­fast ($7.49). They were seasoned well, not too greasy, and had the perfect crisp-to-tender ratio that I look for in a fried potato. Simi­larly, my eggs were just right, and the French toast itself was fine, if wanting a bit more of a soak in custard. The service was friendly and efficient, and the portions were generous. That said, Ruby K's is, quite frankly, a sad little place. While it's situated in a cute old house just off the square, the interior is a shabby simulacrum of Grandma's house, complete with tattered carpet, cheap tables and chairs, and craft-store wall-hangings bearing bon mots such as "Love served here." An assortment of drooping cakes sat forlornly in a cooler with water pooled at the bottom. Lots of shabby, little chic, which can be unnerving for diners. But I think there's a decent meal to be had here, if you can look past the ambience (and the tragic cakes).
