The Common Law: The People's Law School – Learn the Law at No Cost

People's Law School

Anyone who enjoys the "Common Law" should attend the People's Law School (PLS) on Saturday, February 22. PLS is a free event designed to provide basic legal information to the community, demystify the law, and educate people about their legal rights. People who attend PLS will have the chance to learn the basics of common, practical, and everyday legal issues from some of Austin's most distinguished attorneys.

PLS offers dozens of classes on a variety of topics. General topics like family law (divorce and child custody), consumer law (protecting yourself while online and identify theft), employment law (for employers and employees), and wills and estate-planning will be offered. More focused classes include small business law, debt (credit repair, consumer loans, and collections), and the legal process.

The PLS event will take place on Saturday, February 22. Doors open at 8:00am and an optional orientation with introductory remarks begins at 8:30am. Courses will take place over three time slots (9am, 10:30am, and noon), which allow you to take multiple classes on different topics (although you can attend just one class if that's your preference). Each class lasts roughly 75 minutes and concludes with a 15-minute Q&A session.

Check out www.austinbar.org/pages/communitycomm for more information about PLS. A community service organized by the Austin Bar Association, the Lawyer Referral Service of Central Texas, and UT School of Law, PLS is a great way to learn about the law, and best of all, it's absolutely FREE.

Please submit column suggestions, questions, and comments to thecommonlaw@austinchronicle.com. Submission of potential topics does not create an attorney-client relationship, and any information submitted is subject to being included in future columns.
