In full support of Movember, I have risen to the challenge and given up shaving, waxing, and plucking. Though perhaps a bit overzealous, it’s not just an excuse to revel in untamed shrubbery, it’s for a great cause.

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in American males between the ages of 15 and 34. Moreover, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. While there are plenty of us who don't have them, we can all agree testicles should be cancer free. Movember raises awareness and funds to combat prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health challenges many face as a result of their diagnosis. Beginning the month clean-shaven, Movember encourages men to grow a mustache for 30 days while encouraging friends and family to donate to their efforts. The idea is to not only raise money for the cause but to prompt conversations along the way.

One local Austin brewery is joining the movement and doing its part to support men’s health. Cellerman Jerry Coreas of Independence Brewing Co. officially kicked off his fundraising campaign on Nov. 2, shaving off his full beard in preparation for a little lip foliage. “I became aware of Pints for Prostates after Davis Tucker from North By Northwest set off to ride 1400 miles for Pints for Prostates,” says Coreas. “I want to help spread the word that early detection of prostate cancer saves lives. I work at Independence Brewing in Austin, Texas. Most of the guys who work at the brewery are young and probably not thinking about getting screened for prostate cancer. We decided as a brewery to donate a portion of our tasting room sales for Movember.” Indeed, throughout the month Independence will donate a portion of proceeds from their Friday tasting room hours (open from 4-8pm) to the Movember organization. In addition, anyone who purchases a pint glass for $6 will receive two complimentary beers with the glass. So grab a beer, and grow a 'stache. Your balls with thank you.
