The Austin Aztex claimed the PDL Southern Conference Championship Saturday night by beating the Laredo Heat, 2-0. And on Monday morning, they got an even bigger reward, as PDL headquarters announced that Austin will host the national championship final four this coming weekend at House Park: semifinals on Friday; championship game Sunday.

Exact game times and other details are yet to be announced, but what we do know is, the Aztex will play the Ocean City (N.J.) Nor’easters in one semifinal, with the Thunder Bay Chill facing the Victoria Highlanders in the other, all-Canadian, semifinal.

The Aztex advanced by beating the Laredo Heat Saturday night at House Park, 2-0, in a rough physical game between what were clearly the top two teams in the conference. The teams had split a pair of 1-0 decisions in the regular season, each winning at home, and came into the final with a lot of respect for each other. The Aztex took the lead halfway through the first half on a goal by Sito Seoane, assisted by Khiry Shelton, but the decision remained in the balance until Shelton poked home a clincher with about five minutes to go, set up by Tucker Hume after a nice buildup between several players. That set of a roar from the crowd, and the "Campeones" chant referenced in the headline above.
