By Nick Barbaro, 8:17AM, Tue. Jul. 23, 2013
The Austin Aztex will host the PDL Southern Conference Championships at House Park this Friday and Saturday, after clinching the best record in the conference on the last weekend of the regular season. The Aztex take on the Panama City Beach Pirates Friday night at 7:30pm, with the conference final to follow Saturday, also at 7:30.
Friday's first semifinal pits the Laredo Heat (the only team to beat the Aztex in the regular season) against Southeastern Division champions, the Ocala Stampede, with kickoff at 5pm. Tickets are $10 for each day; both games of the semifinal doubleheader are included for one price, and fans with unused regular season tickets can redeem them for these games as well.
The Aztex finished the regular season with a record of 11-1-2, with their totals of 35 points, 11 wins, 38 goals, and just eight goals allowed, all ranking second in the nation in the 64-team PDL. They were led in scoring by forward Kris Tyrpak, with nine goals and an assist.
The PDL's other conference championships are being hosted by the Thunder Bay Chill, Ocean City Nor’easters, and Ventura County Fusion. The four conference winners advance to the national championships the following weekend, with the host city to be determined among those four.
