Aztex Blank Houston, Stay Unbeaten

Austin Aztex hold onto division lead
Nick Barbaro, 9:22am, Mon. Jul. 1, 2013
Andres Cuero had two goals and an assist to lead the Austin Aztex past the Houston Dutch Lions Saturday night at House Park. Kris Tyrpak and Aaron Guillen tallied as well, as the Aztex finished a season sweep of the Dutch Lions, 4-0, to remain undefeated and in first place in the PDL Mid South Division.

Cuero took over the team scoring lead with five goals and two assists, all coming in the last four games. Tyrpak has five goals as well. But again, coach Paul Dalglish credited a whole team effort for controlling play in the middle, attacking up the flanks, and creating lots of scoring chances: “We used 17 players tonight, and every single one of them was outstanding,” he said after the game on the team website.

That depth is proving critical down the stretch. With Oklahoma City and Laredo also winning Saturday, the Aztex remain atop the division standings by six points, with five games left to play. A win Wednesday night in Laredo (8:15pm) would all but clinch a playoff spot. Then it’s quickly back to Austin, to host the West Texas Sockers Friday night, July 5, at 7:30pm at House Park. Get there early to see local country band Brass Buckle playing a full set pre-game, 6:30-7:15pm.

The rest of the schedule:
Wed., 7/3, 8:15pm - at Laredo Heat
Fri., 7/5, 7:30pm - West Texas Sockers at House Park
Sat., 7/13, 7:30pm - Oklahoma City at House Park
Thur., 7/18, 7:30pm - at West Texas Sockers
Sat., 7/20, 9:00pm - at El Paso Patriots
