Now’s your chance to fund a film about people having sex with themselves

Founded in Austin in 2008 as an alternative way to get your rocks off, the Air Sex World Championships have ascended to lofty heights of Air Fill-in-the-Blank competition. The simulated lovefest serves 30-plus cities, has appeared at two festivals, and even received mention on NBC’s America’s Got Talent from Howard Stern.

The operation looks like this. It’s raw, wild, and entirely wacked out. And it’s time to make a movie about it.

Working in conjunction with local comedian and longtime ASWC host Chris Trew, New Orleanian documentarian Jonathan Evans has spent the past three weeks cruising around the country with some of the finest sex simulators in the country, documenting their antics and exploits for a feature-length film called Air Sex: Making Love Out of Nothing At All.

The film’s set to capture all that goes down on the biggest Air Sex tour in history as it snakes through 14 cities, culminating with the 2013 championships in Evans’ native New Orleans, the first time that the championships will be held anywhere outside of Austin.

Evans wrote that he hopes the documentary will capture all of the many things that can go wrong before, during, and after an Air Sex show.

“Sometimes the venue is crummy, or no promotions happened and only 10 people show up. Other times, a competitor’s 3-foot dildo goes missing, or it won’t shoot yogurt out like it’s supposed to. Sometimes the police show up to shut down what they think is an illegal live erotic sex show.”

Evans managed to fund most of the filming costs himself, but he needs your help getting the movie off the ground. For the next three weeks, he’s running a Kickstarter campaign that hopes to raise $15,000, money that will go toward things like editing, legal fees, DVD production, licensing, music mixing, and festival entry fees.

“We also intend to create a fully original soundtrack,” Evans wrote, “featuring songs created specifically for the wonderful Air Sex routines in the film.”

Evans has raised a little more than $5,000 since starting the campaign, so he's got $10,000 to go. Give the project a look, and throw a bone its way.
