Three Chefs Compete in Austin's First Trailer Truck-Off
Over the past few weeks, more than 20 aspiring food truck chefs have submitted proposals for a contract to operate a trailer at the Eastside's historic Scoot Inn. Scoot owner and ATX Brands honcho Doug Guller has chosen three finalists based on their concept, menus, and business plans. They'll cook for the win on Saturday afternoon, May 4th.
The three finalists will each prepare a signature dish representing their concept. Those dishes will be evaluated by Doug Guller and a panel of judges including Andrea Grimes of Eater Austin, Matthew Odam of the Austin American-Statesman, KGSR's Andy Langer, and myself. The winner will be chosen based on overall concept, plus the taste and presentation of their dish. The winner will be announced after the cook-off.
The three finalists are cooking for the opportunity to sign a six-month contract. Here's some idea of what the deal includes: ATX Brands provides a fully-operational food truck worth about $12,000 on the grounds of the Scoot Inn, a busy music venue with an already-established clientele; rent and utilities are free, as is access to ATX Brands marketing and publicity. The concept, menu, and recipes become the property of ATX Brands and the monthly financial split is 80/20; with 80% being kept by the operator and 20% being paid to ATX Brands. "If the first six months go well, I'm interested in seeing the winner build a career here," says Guller.
The Trailer Truck-Off is open to the public and guests are welcome to enjoy the music of The Bluebird Specials outdoors along with drink specials at the bar and sample bites of the dishes being prepared by the three contestants.
