50 Cent Rolls Into SXSW
Having already announced appearances by hip-hop kings (Master P), princes (Kendrick Lamar), and crusaders (Killer Mike), South by Southwest now puts forth rap enforcer 50 Cent, slated for a SXSW Interview on Saturday, March 16, at the Austin Convention Center.
On his recent single “Major Distribution,” off the long delayed Street King Immortal LP (now slated for a spring release), Fif comes off defensive:
“I’m a rap tycoon/ Make a hundred mil by June/ Now who the fuck said I can’t rap, Jack?”
No matter, the 37-year-old Queens native’s mic skills have become increasingly secondary in the scope of his massive brand extensions, which include acting, a signature Vitamin Water flavor, his SMS headphones company, and authoring several books including his latest, Formula 50: A 6-Week Workout and Nutrition Plan That Will Transform Your Life, in which the hulking rapper shares bodybuilding and dieting techniques.
Expect talk about the possibility of a G-Unit reunion with original members Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo, which has become a hot topic in the hip-hop press after 50 gave fans hope in a recent interview with ESPN. These SXSW sit-downs, which in the last two years have featured tenured rappers Nas and Chamillionaire, may be as up close and personal as anyone gets to these mad MCs.
Of course 50 Cent attended SXSW last year, performing his Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album in its entirety at the Shady Records 2.0 showcase, joined by label boss Eminem on the song “Patiently Waiting.” While the bulletproof vested MC has no scheduled musical performances this year, don’t rule it out.
This is, after all, SXSW.
