Local Gaming News-Bites
Starhawk, made by local PlayStation developer LightBox Interactive, will be in stores on May 8. Until then you can watch this trailer. Looks promising what with the robots, space dogfights, jetpacks, flying motorcycles, large blades and guns, etc. The narrator sounds serious too, like old-bluesman serious. All in all the game looks like it will put hair on your chest.
Another big name in local developing, Arkane Studios, also have a trailer to show off. It's for Dishonored, the steampunk first-person shooter that's been impressing us with its art style and polish. Check out the trailer and, for bonus points, you can listen to the podcast on the Bethesda website.
Blue Goggle Films has been making live-action videogame parodies once a month for almost a year, and their dedication just payed off. Gametrailers.com has rebranded the series as De-Pixelated and will run the shorts on their site. It's definitely for the hardcore gamer crowd (jokes include, "I had my Asari phase in college," get it?), but their most recent Resident Evil flick (and the first as De-Pixelated) looks pretty slick and isn't really funny so much as completely serious. I'm sure the kids who go to the Austin Can! Academy where it was shot will be looking over their shoulder at school for a while.
In the mixed feelings department, Austin's Replay Games successfully funded the remake of Leisure Suit Larry. Some might remember it as the soft-core porn of the Sierra catalog back in the late 80s. The fact that the game is touted as "HD" gives us pause. But there are few things about the LSL series that doesn't. Original writer Al Lowe is on board, and judging by the double-entendre laden Twitter feed, the series is in good hands. Or bad hands, we're still unsure. Check out the "fireside chat" with Lowe to get a sense of what's in store.
Rooster Teeth's Red vs. Blue web series will soon return for its 10th season. Prepare yourself with this trailer. Yup, that's Elijah Wood as the voice of the weird, flaming, Lawnmower Man looking guy at the end.
Oh, and the Rooster Teeth Expo takes over the Austin Convention Center the weekend of July 7 and 8. It's only $45, and features ... uh ... videogame ... stuff. That's about as specific as we can get. More info will hopefully be revealed as the event approaches.
