SXSW Music: Lucky No. 7 List

Action Bronson, Deerhoof, Laura Marling, and 160 more

After unloading three big lineup lists, South By Southwest has been portioning out artist announcements in small weekly batches. Lucky number seven adds 163 acts to a master list that now totals 1,506. That leaves roughly 500 slots unfilled for the SXSW Music Conference, Mar. 17-22 – just over one month away.

While the headliner reveals likely won’t arrive for at least two more weeks, today’s allotment yields worthy picks including edgy noise-pop makers Deerhoof, heavyweight MC Action Bronson, indie rockers Delta Spirit – whose frontman Matt Vasquez calls Austin home – 21-year-old buzz rapper Casey Veggies, CenTex songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard, garage punk pinnacle the Spits, instrumentalist Samiyam, veteran DJ and rapper Prince Paul, and unorthodox hot rockers Speedy Ortiz.

And that’s just from the States.

Internationally, British folksinger Laura Marling and Irish singer songwriter James Vincent McMorrow top a list of about a dozen European artists. Canada loans us popular EDM duo Zed’s Dead, one of eight acts from our northerly neighbors. Looking south, Mexico positions another four acts in the SXSW scrum, among them popular soft rocker Siddhartha.

Un-Google-able South Korean electro-rockers From the Airport represent the list’s only Asian import, while Africa, specifically Kenya, brings in house/disco songcrafters Just a Band.

Locally, 23 soldiers from Austin’s ranks are called in. They vary from the established (Carolyn Wonderland) to a brand new metal band that wears leather gimp masks (Tear Dungeon). Also included: Bad Lovers, Booher, Boyfrndz, Dellacoma, DJ Hella Yella, dLo, Flatliner, Good Field, Greenbeard, Jesse Dayton, Keeper, Loki, Curtis McMurtry, Midnight Masses, Not in the Face, Otis the Destroyer, Pleasers, Ruby Jane, Silent Diane, Town Hall Devils, and the Wolf.
