Filmmaker Magazine Lauds Annie Silverstein

Only two weeks ago we were talking up Annie Silverstein’s wild ride to winning a major award at Cannes 2014. The ride hasn’t slowed any: Filmmaker Magazine just named her one of its “25 New Faces of Independent Film.”

Filmmaker Magazine’s long-running feature is an annual weather vane of indie film, a licked finger in the air testing where the winds of new talent are blowing in. More often than not, they’re picking up gales from the Austin independent film community. Silverstein joins a long tradition of local filmmakers to make the cut, including most recent honorees Hannah Fidell (Class of 2012), Joe Nicolosi and David Lowery (Class of 2011), and Susan Youssef (Class of 2010). Here’s the opening graf from the magazine’s piece on Silverstein:

"A stolen pit bull, a 14-year-old girl, and an aggressive sexual exchange set the stage for a slyly animalistic act of revenge in Annie Silverstein’s suspenseful and unexpectedly empowering 'Skunk,' her short film that took the top prize this year at Cannes’ Cinéfondation. But while the picture may have been the writer-director’s thesis film at University of Texas, it is actually the product of her decade’s work with just the kind of at-risk youth depicted so honestly on screen."
