SXSW Film Releases Full Feature Lineup

To live in Texas is to take "hometown heroes" to a whole new level.

Our collective state pride pervades all that we do, from our insane devotion to high school football to our communal spirit of filmmaking in the face of the bigwigs in New York and L.A. So it should come as no surprise that Texas and Austin in particular are represented in force in this year's South by Southwest Film Festival lineup, released today.

Those local Sundance Film Festival favorites you've been reading about – including Kat Candler's Hellion (starring the one and only Aaron Paul) and a trip through pitcher Dock Ellis' career in No No: A Dockumentary – will make their way to town as part of the Festival Favorites category. Joining them in that category are Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, by the Zellner Brothers; Michael Tully's Ping Pong Summer; Drafthouse Films' The Dog; and, of course, Richard Linklater's much-anticipated Boyhood.

Speaking of Linklater, he's half the subject matter of a special screening of Double Play: James Benning and Richard Linklater, which we wrote more about when it was being Kickstarted last summer.

Two other pieces of the Special Events puzzle are especially exciting: SXSW is celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with a screening, and Wes Anderson is doing a Q&A after a screening of his forthcoming Grand Budapest Hotel.

Austin projects take three slots in the Headliners category as well, with the previously announced Chef, the opening night film from Jon Favreau that was shot in part around town and Rob Thomas' Veronica Mars, as well as David Gordon Green's Joe.

Look for more Austin residents and alumni in competition doc The Great Invisible, Narrative Spotlight Thank You a Lot, Documentary Spotlight Above All Else, and Visions selections Arlo and Julie (directed by Steve Mims), Creep (from Mark Duplass), and Open Windows (starring Elijah Wood and filmed, in part, at Fantastic Fest). Last year, we had to make a bingo card for all the actors in two, three, four, five, and six films; we suspect this year's complicated family tree won't be any different.

New this year is the Episodic category of screenings, which will feature premieres from forthcoming television series – bringing the small screen to the big screen in a big way. Neil deGrasse Tyson's COSMOS was already on our radar, but Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn series is coming too, as is Mike Judge's HBO project, Silicon Valley.
