Funny Funny Funny at Fun Fun Fun
Laughter is supposedly the best medicine; yet it has no curative agency over ruptured eardrums, alcohol poisoning, or black lung. All of which can fell you at Fun Fun Fun Fest in the midst of all that tri-mirth.
Snickering, chortling, or guffawing can’t work miracles, no matter how ardently Patch Adams protests. One of the many things laughter does well, however, is make a good thing kick ass even harder. The musical core of Fun Fun Fun is already, shall we say, “merry” enough without any outside help. But the festivals’ supporting comedy wing diversifies and adds elite levity to an already engrossing, wall-to-wall weekend at Auditorium Shores.
Last year’s memorable rotation included sets by David Cross, Hannibal Buress, Wyatt Cenac, Doug Benson, Eugene Mirman, Tig Notaro, and Austin’s Chris Cubas, to name a few. This year’s bill promises – nay, swears to deliver – just as much gut-peeing, pants-busting laugh delirium. Festival organizers announced the 2013 Comedy lineup hours prior to Saturday’s saturating, sun-bleached Fun Fun Fun Aqua Olympics at Fiesta Gardens. (Organizers also announced an expanded food presence at this year’s fest, under the direction of local barbecue maven John Mueller as "Official Curator of Grub.”)
Should Slayer or M.I.A. hold the line and refrain from cracking wise, this years’ spread of funny people will assuredly pick up the slack. Without further ado: Jaw-dropping stand-ups set to appear include Patton Oswalt, Tenacious D, Craig Robinson, Doug Benson, Rob Delaney, The Eric Andre Show Live, Jenny Slate, Kyle Kinane, Jonah Ray, and numerous others. (Sigh), will November ever come?
