'Chronicle' Adult Spelling Bee Takes Place Tonight

Calling all wordsmiths! Or just people who like to watch! And drink!
Kimberley Jones, 10:24am, Thu. May. 9, 2013

Yes, the weather forecast is a little ominous, but why base your plans on a “chance” of something when you can be 100% certain that staggering feats of orthographer prowess will rain down on the audience tonight at the The Austin Chronicle’s Adult Spelling Bee at Threadgill’s World Headquarters?

Now in its 11th year, the Chron’s Adult Spelling Bee is good for the head and the heart: fiercely competitive fun that also benefits the Austin Public Library.

Interested in competing? Registration runs from 4:30-6pm – it costs only $3 to enter, by the way – followed by two rounds of spelling tests to winnow down the pool, and finals at 7:30pm. It all happens today (5/9) at Threadgill’s World Headquarters (301 W. Riverside Dr.).

Worried about stage fright? That’s what $3 ZiegenBock drafts are for. Not a speller, more of a heckler? Come to watch your fellow Austinites dominate the dictionary, and all for charity.

Find out more here. For a taste of what’s to come, read Josh Kupecki’s recap of last year’s spelling bee.
