Kickstarting a 'Veronica Mars' Movie [UPDATED]

It doesn't really need your help, but !!!! anyway
James Renovitch, 6:30pm, Wed. Mar. 13, 2013
Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas celebrate after shooting the pilot for the Veronica Mars TV show.

That's right, everyone's favorite whipsmart and sassy student, Veronica Mars, is looking to make the leap to the big screen.

Just launched this morning, the Kickstarter campaign already has $1.7 million of the $2 million goal, so you can stand down. Or you can stand up with the 27,000 other people who love the show enough to put their money where their mouths are.

The show's creator, UT grad Rob Thomas, kickstarted the Kickstarter and claims to have the approval Warner Bros. to do the film if they get the money (which seems inevitable at this point). If they get more than that, Thomas says he can include "a Bollywood end-credit dance number." We talked to Thomas back in 2006 about the cult phenomenon that is Veronica Mars.

The show's star, Kristen Bell, is already on board and in a message posted on the Kickstarter page is "the happiest blonde in a hamster ball the world has ever seen." We're not sure what that means exactly, but we're glad, because she's the only Veronica for us.

Just $25 gets you a T-shirt. If you have $5,000 to burn, you can get them to screen the movie in your hometown for yourself and 50 of your closest friends. We'd start a Kickstarter just to get the five grand for that if we weren't certain they'll be screening that here in Austin regardless. Again, don't let that stop you from donating.

UPDATED: As if we needed anymore encouragement, Thomas and Bell, who's gone on the record as being a big-time Austin fan, are already plotting a big premiere shindig in our environs. Let's make this happen, people!

REUPDATED: Yep, it got its $2 million in the first day. Who's surprised? But don't let that stop you; icing on the cake is still icing, you know?
